Even though Ohio State has to replace four starters along its offensive line, three starting wideouts, a quarterback who rewrote the conference history record book and a number of key defenders, Ryan Day still has the most loaded roster in the Big Ten.
That's something we established earlier this week. The Buckeye roster has more former 5-star or top-50 players from their respective recruiting classes than the rest of the Big Ten combined.
That gives new head coach Ryan Day a lot of options during fall camp as he sets his first depth chart in stone. Many of the open position battles were won and lost during spring practice, but a few key spots are still up for grabs.
While some of the projected starters listed below are technically in ongoing position battles, I'm comfortable calling these shots, particularly for the sole defender who made the list.
These three new starters have the potential to make a lot of noise for Ohio State and play at an all-conference level this fall.
TERADJA MITCHELL
Ohio State's linebacker play caused a lot of issues defensively last season, and a big part of that was a lack of speed at the middle of the defense.
Tuf Borland returns after starting at middle linebacker last season, but Teradja Mitchell has pushed him for the starting role all offseason. That's a sentiment that was echoed by Ryan Day last month.
“Tuf Borland played a lot for us last year and he's being pushed,” Day said. “He's being pushed by Teradja Mitchell.”
If Mitchell wins the job, he could explode in Ohio State's revamped defense.
Co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison and new linebackers coach Al Washington come from Michigan after grooming several high-caliber linebackers. Mitchell's combination of speed and power should allow him to thrive in that overhauled defense.

Rooting for this kid. Love Borland's grit and willingness to return from injury but speed is needed in the middle of the defense.

Ohio State is loaded with talent once again this season, but much of it is unproven.
The Buckeyes signed their two highest-rated recruiting classes of the modern era in 2017 and 2018, and with those players entering their second and third seasons respectively, it’s their time to make an impact – in many cases, for the first time.
Here are 10 players who will be stepping into larger roles with the team and seem poised for breakout seasons in 2019.

Mitchell saw just two defensive snaps the entire 2018 season, seeing most of his action on special teams, but Ryan Day said Mitchell is pushing incumbent Mike linebacker Tuf Borland for playing time this fall.
Whether or not Mitchell can beat out Borland for the job before the season starts, he will most likely see the field in some rotational capacity, giving him an opportunity to prove himself in a live game scenario. When that happens, it could be hard to keep him off the field.

Teradja Mitchell (Four-star; No. 2 ILB, No. 44 Overall in 2018)
Ohio State will be returning two of its three starting linebackers in 2020, but will be losing the best player in the unit with the departure of Malik Harrison to the NFL Draft. The Buckeyes may not truly need to find a new starter, as technically Tuf Borland and Baron Browning split time at middle linebacker. Ryan Day and his defensive staff could easily decide to move the athletic Browning to Harrison’s unoccupied spot, but if they still want to feature a rotation at the Mike, Teradja Mitchell might be their man.
A third member of that No. 2-ranked 2018 recruiting class on this list, Mitchell came to Ohio State as a top-50 national recruit. He has always been touted as a hard-hitting, aggressive linebacker, but has had a tough time getting onto the field thus far. Expected to have a bigger role in 2019, Mitchell was limited throughout the year with a hamstring injury, and would wind up appearing in just nine games while recording a total of 12 tackles. While he was able to make a few highlight plays given the rare opportunity, his sophomore campaign would become nothing more than a development year.
There will be fierce competition for playing time at linebacker in 2020. Browning and Pete Werner have obviously earned their spots, and while Borland has been a polarizing player among the Ohio State fanbase, the coaches have lauded his abilities as a leader. Add in Dallas Gant, Justin Hillard and K’Vaughan Pope, and you have a rather crowded room. Mitchell profiles as an interior linebacker, and so it is unlikely he would takeover outside in place of Harrison. However, it would not be at all surprising for the junior to play in a rotation role similar to that of Browning last season.

Teradja Mitchell ready to bloom for Ohio State
The debate continues over whether Ohio State is more the DBU, the WRU or the LBU as yet another NFL draft looms. And on the cusp of the start of spring drills, all three of those position groups offer compelling intrigue in regards to who will rise to fill key personnel losses for the Buckeyes. But this missive is more about who can emerge from the linebacker corps to become more of a regular in the fall. It says here that at least one of those tulips will be Teradja Mitchell. Whether he’ll challenge returning starter Tuf Borland for time at the MIKE spot, or whether he might play well enough to gain a look at the WILL spot, vacated by draft-bound Malik Harrison and expected to be contested by Baron Browning and K’Vaughan Pope, remains to be seen. But I must agree with the tweet Mitchell, the collision specialist, put out a few weeks ago: “Gotta thank God in advance for all the blessings about to come my way.”
