McVey's motor drives Wildcats

Sunday, November 30, 2008 Tim Warsinskey
Plain Dealer Reporter

Canton- Football coaches like to talk about great players' "motors," as if there's a Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine rattling and belching smoke under all those pads and tape.
St. Ignatius linebackers coach Ryan Franziger took a more scientific approach when explaining junior outside linebacker Scott McVey's memorable performance in the Wildcats' 28-20 state championship victory over Cincinnati Elder on Saturday.
"He's like negatively charged with the ball," Franzinger said. "The ball snaps, and he just goes to the ball. It's amazing. He could be the best player in Ohio."

I imagine having Franzinger as McVey's linebacker coach will only help OSU. For those of you who don't know, Ryan Franzinger was a walkon (earned a scholarship as a senior) fullback for Ohio State from 2004-2006.

I expect this young Phenom will be offered shortly by Tress and Co. Reminds me of Chris Gappilo from Servite high school in SoCal who is currently waiting his turn @ SC.

McVey is a little lighter and quicker but the nose for the ball thing is uncanny like Gappilo.

Word is Scott is faster than Moeller and Hines HS and also has a frame to carry 225-235.

I actually find the speed thing hard to believe. Not a knock on McVey as much as it is an endorsement for Hines/Moeller at the HS level. Moeller had some of the best HS game speed I've ever seen. Looked like a sprinter on one of the best & quickest defenses in Ohio history. Even looked fast next to Revels & Mixon.

Hines -- well you know well enough how quick he was.

McVey is fast enough & appears to have ridiculous instincts. He's a definite offer, IMO.

Absolutely agree on both counts..Tyler Moeller has been one of my favorites since H&G hooked us up with him. Great kid. I can't comment with personal experience but the guys saying as much are folks I respect in evaluation.

Either way, great company in comparison...and agreed on the offer.
