LB Ryan Shazier (All B1G, All-American, 2017 Pro Bowl)

In my opinion, Ohio St LB Ryan Shazier is a better player than Alec Ogletree. He's more instinctive and his take-on skills are superior.

RT @SprowESPN: Shazier has safety size -- needs more LBs. > He reminds me of Daryl Washington. Plays much bigger than his size.

Ohio State junior LB Ryan Shazier named Big Ten defensive player of year in preseason media poll

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio State junior linebacker Ryan Shazier was picked as the Big Ten's preseason defensive player of the year in a poll of 26 conference writers organized by The Plain Dealer.

A first-team All-Big Ten selection by the media last season, and a second-team choice by the coaches, Shazier received 16 of 26 votes, well ahead of runner-up Chris Borland. The senior linebacker from Wisconsin received four votes. He was a first-team All-Big Ten pick by the coaches last season and honorable mention from the media.

Michigan State linebacker Max Bullough received three votes, Ohio State cornerback Bradley Roby got two votes (including one from this voter) and Northwestern defensive lineman Tyler Scott had one vote.

LB Ryan Shazier is the only returning starter to the Buckeyes' defensive front seven.

CHICAGO -- Ohio State LB Ryan Shazier was not at Big Ten media days, but he is garnering plenty of attention heading into his junior season.

Coach Urban Meyer was asked Thursday if Shazier is set to join the ranks of the best Buckeye linebackers of all-time, a group that includes current NFL players James Laurinaitis and A.J. Hawk.

Meyer would not go that far in his praise, though.

"He still has work to do," Meyer said. "By the end of the season, I thought he was playing at a very high level. You start talking about a list of the great ones, I don't know if I can go there yet. I'm just not sure. The way he finished the season last year, he's one of the best 'backers I've had."

Shazier is on the Butkus Award and Lombardi Award watch lists after finishing among the Big Ten's top 10 in five different statistical categories last season. He led the conference with 17 tackles for loss and finished second in the league with 115 total tackles.

NFL.com draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah rates Shazier as the 14th-most talented player in college football on his Talented Top 50 list.

He has shown maturity this offseason, too, according to Buckeyes safety Christian Bryant.

"Ryan really has improved a lot in his leadership skills," Bryant said Thursday. "He's a lot more vocal than he has been in the past and I feel like that's because he's growing up."

The Buckeyes need Shazier to take on more of a leadership role -- he is the only returning starter in the front seven on defense.

High 5: Clowney among college football's most explosive players

Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State

Shazier has a lean build for a linebacker, but he is extremely explosive as a tackler. He accelerates right before contact and creates some "wow" shots on tape. He has the range to make plays from sideline to sideline because of his outstanding speed and burst. He is also a very explosive blitzer for the Buckeyes. He racked up five sacks last fall.

Ohio State assistant athletic director of sports performance Mickey Marotti called junior Ryan Shazier the fastest LB he has ever coaches, "and it's not even close."
Marotti spent six years at Florida, so he has seen athletes all over the field. Expect a lot of buzz around Shazier this season, and it is all valid. Many will lock onto his perceived lack of mass or strength, but Shazier just needs to learn to use his length to keep distance from blockers. His closing speed on the edge is ridiculous, and we wouldn't be surprised to read comparisons between his game and Lavonte David's. Aug 8

2. OLB Ryan Shazier (6-2, 226, 4.63)*
Simply one of my favorite players to break down on tape, Shazier is an easy prospect to appreciate with his play speed and aggressive nature to blow up blocks and chase down the ballcarrier. A Florida native, he appeared destined for Gainesville to be a Gator, but Ohio State swayed him to move north to be a Buckeye. After a promising freshman season in 2011, Shazier was arguably Ohio State's top defender last season as a sophomore, leading the team with 115 tackles (45 more stops than the Buckeyes' second-leading tackler). He has an explosive first step with instant acceleration, playing with the range to cover both sidelines and make stops in the backfield, also leading the team in tackles for loss (17) last year. Some might be turned off by his lack of ideal size and strength, but Shazier shows better take-on toughness than many linebackers bigger than him. He is instinctive with excellent field vision and recognition skills, rarely making mistakes, but he does have room to get stronger and improve his awareness in pass coverage. A smart, goal-oriented linebacker, Shazier has a good head on his shoulders and is fueled by his football passion and desire to be the best. If he continues to grow and takes another step forward as a junior in 2013, Shazier could join Roby as a top-20 selection in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Ohio State junior OLB Ryan Shazier received a seventh-round to undrafted free agent preseason label from draft insider Tony Pauline.

We are shocked, but it is never a bad thing to read a view point that goes against conventional wisdom, even if this one is on the opposite end of the spectrum. Shazier is an "athletic weak-side linebacker prospect best in pursuit or chase and run," writes Pauline. "Offers skills in coverage but must improve his strength." Many will look at Shazier's lean build as a negative, but we think his ability to use length to keep distance is a major advantage. Also, the NFL is valuing prospects like Shazier at a much higher rate compared to just a few years ago.
