LB Ryan Shazier (All B1G, All-American, 2017 Pro Bowl)

I don't know if it will pan out this way next season, but imagine the following as the LB core:

SAM: C. Grant
MIKE: E. Sabino
WILL: R. Shazier

Will be one of the most physically gifted LB cores we've had here, and that's saying alot.
And yet none was able to beat out Storm Klein for a starting position until the 11th game of the season. Interesting dynamic there.

considering two of them were true freshmen, I can't imagine what part of that is interesting. particularly when one of them is a kid physically and never played linebacker before the spring.

plus there's the aforementioned detail of not beating Klein out period.

Two instinctive things I really like about him, especially given his size relative to blockers and running backs: 1) he gets off of blocks really well and doesn't seem to absorb the full impact of a block from a larger player; 2) he doesn't usually tackle "head-on" and this, again, lessens the energy that he's having to absorb.

He obviously isn't afraid of contact, he just seems to understand that there's no point to absorbing more than is necessary and that it's better to being doing the hitting. I have tried to "teach" both of these "skills" and it only goes so far. I think you just have to have spatial and physics awareness, past a certain point, naturally. This kid has enormous upside. Love his closing speed... could go on and on...
