LB Ryan Shazier (All B1G, All-American, 2017 Pro Bowl)

braxton miller and ryan shazier....two players that should have started from day 1 but didnt...best series shazier had was the goal line stand...i think he made every single tackle...i know on 2nd and goal he was the lone unblocked player to stuff the RB at the goal line...glad we got this kid for at least 2 more years

He makes great plays but to say he should have started from Day 1 might be stretching it. You think he should start over Sweat? That TD up the middle for 40 yards are so was pretty much on Shazier. Those are things he'll learn quickly (at least we'd hope) and once he does, LOOK OUT.

Pretty much on Shazer? Are there not 10 other guys out there. In particular other linebackers and two safeties in the middle of the field? Shazer was just 1 error in what was many errors on that play.

obviously sweat is our most experienced LB and him and shazier pretty much play the same side...but i will ask u this...did you miss sweat last night? i didnt...shazier's first start and he basically dominated the team in tackles...i dont have a stat sheet on me but i dont remember sweat ever doing that this year...i know shazier has had some brain farts here and there but the fact that we cant figure out some sort of way to get him on the field is just stupid...i know its easier said then done, switching any of the LB's to a new side to make room for a freshman on the outside is not done often, if ever...but this kid has been here since January and you have had alot of time to evaluate this kids potential.... i think it goes to show that fickell and his staff's evaluation on talent is terrible...makes me wonder who else riding the bench should be getting a shot (particularly in the secondary)

Linebackers are supposed to fill holes. His assignment is to fill that hole. He wasn't there because he read the play wrong and was late getting there. That was a fatal error and it cost us 6 points.

He made up for it plenty of times throughout the night. Once he learns more, he won't make that type of error. Put 15 pounds on that kid and he'll be an All-American in my opinion.

That was on him, but the safety also had a chance to stop the play 5 yards later and he also missed.

Our safeties provided little to nothing in terms of run support

Yea Sabino not shedding the block or the safeties overrunning the play had nothing to do with it either. I get what your saying on the rest but don't put that play entirely on Shazer. The upper classman I do see out there...well its better I keep my mouth shut. Shazer and Miller are holding their own and doing it very well.

i agree he didnt react quick enough on this play and missed his assignment...but im not going to blame him entirely for the TD...if i remember correctly on that play klein missed a tackle and orian johnson completely got burnt

Klein got eaten up by an Olinemen, and Johnson, as we all know, does not stop the run, so yeah he took a bad angle and got outrun.

Shazier was the primary guy to screw up there.. but I feel he's getting too much flak for that play, when he was great the rest of the game

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier has been named the Big Ten Conference freshman of the week. The league announced the honor Monday based on Shazier's personal-best 15-tackle performance Saturday against Penn State.

Shazier, making his first collegiate start, had a game-high seven solo tackles to go along with eight assists. The 15 tackles represents the most by a Buckeye since linebacker Ross Homan recorded 15 in 2009 vs. Wisconsin. The last Buckeye to top 15 tackles was linebacker James Laurinaitis; he had 17 in a 2007 game vs. the Badgers.

Shazier, the second Buckeye to earn freshman of the week accolades this season (Braxton Miller was honored after his big game vs. Wisconsin), now has 39 tackles on the season, including five tackles for loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles. He also blocked a punt that led to a touchdown in the win over Wisconsin.

Note: the phonetic pronunciation of Ryan Shazier's last name is shay-ZEER
