It might have seemed hard to live up to the hype for Liberty County?s Raekwon McMillan as the junior entered this football season with offers from a some of the best programs in the country.
But the linebacker has shined under the spotlight ? helping lead the Panthers to a 3-1 record with outstanding play on both sides of the ball.
The 6-foot-3, 235-pound McMillan has lost count of how many scholarship offers he has, but a look on the Rivals website shows 23 schools that are vying to land the blue chip prospect. He lists his current top five as Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, Southern Cal and Alabama.
McMillan was all over the field last Friday as the host Panthers defeated Cross Creek, 42-7. McMillan had 10 tackles, including two for a loss and two sacks (one for a safety), a forced fumble and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown. He also chipped in on offense with 10 carries for 50 yards and a pair of touchdowns to earn Savannah Morning News Player of the Week honors.
?I guess I had a pretty good game,? said McMillan, who leads defensive players in the Morning News coverage area with 67 tackles. ?I really haven?t felt any additional pressure with all the recruiting. I?m just going out there day in and day out and trying to become the best player I can be.?
McMillan sacked the Cross Creek quarterback for a safety and also had a sack/strip, where he hit the quarterback?s arm causing a fumble, which he scooped up and returned for a 15-yard touchdown.
?That play was a highlight reel in itself,? Liberty County coach Kirk Warner said. ?He knocked the ball loose and picked it up. Then he reversed his field and showed off some speed beating everyone to the corner of the end zone.?
This year Warner has been using McMillan on offense as a running back, and he has been tough to bring down. McMillan scored on runs of 5 and 1 yards in the win over Cross Creek.
?We?ve had some injuries on offense, so we decided to get our best players on the field when we can,? Warner said. ?I?m trying to limit Raekwon to 15-20 offensive snaps right now. But when the weather starts cooling down, he might be on the field for 80-90 snaps a game.?
McMillan is up for the challenge.
?I?m trying to get in the best possible shape to get ready to play at the next level,? McMillan said. ?We?re excited about our team this year. We?ve improved a lot because we are starting to play together as a team. Last year we played a little bit selfish and were too worried about individual accomplishments, but this year it?s all about the team.?
