Latest setback ends D'Andrea's Ohio State career

Mike D’Andrea, shown here in practice last year, will have another surgery on his right knee that will officially end his Ohio State career.
The injury-plagued career of Ohio State linebacker Mike D'Andrea is over, coach Jim Tressel said yesterday.
On his weekly radio show, Tressel said D'Andrea's surgically repaired right knee has bothered him to the point that he likely will have another surgery soon. As a fifth-year senior, that would end his playing days.
"It's a condition he has not been able to shake," Tressel said. "Just for his future, he needs to have a surgery."
D'Andrea, 22, came out of Avon Lake in the 2002 recruiting class as one of the top linebackers in the nation. He was considered a bigger prize than A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter, who were first-round NFL draft picks in April.
But D'Andrea injured a shoulder late in 2003, his sophomore season, and then suffered a major knee injury during practice Sept. 24, 2004. He had surgery shortly afterward.
Since then, he has appeared only briefly in four games. He was granted a medical redshirt last year in hopes he could play this season.
D'Andrea participated in the first 10 days or so of preseason camp, but by the team's Aug. 18 jersey scrimmage, he was sidelined.
In 30 career games, including four starts, D'Andrea totaled 44 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.
Talk about a persistent Buckeye! MDA stuck with all the grind, when perhaps others would have thrown in the towel. Shows his character. My guess is: he will have a bright future outside of sports.
I would love to see that! After spending 5 years under Tress and defensive minds like D'Antonio, Snyder and Heacock I'd imagine he learned a thing or two.Agreed. Or a bright future within in it in an assistant or coaching capacity?
