Grant gives immediate help to depleted Buckeyes linebacking unit

COLUMBUS | — The lure of immediate playing time has helped Ohio State land four of the top 25 high school linebackers in the nation, but those incoming freshmen will be getting competition from another coveted recruit.

<!-- inset --> <!--begintext--> Larry Grant of City College of San Francisco — the California JUCO defensive player of the year — picked the Buckeyes over Oregon on Tuesday. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound sophomore had committed to Florida, but he lacked a class needed to meet Southeastern Conference requirements.
OSU coach Jim Tressel had never dipped into the junior-college ranks in five previous recruiting efforts, but losing three starting linebackers and nine defensive regulars put the Buckeyes in a quick-fix mode.
Grant is the No. 1 JUCO linebacker in the nation and the fourth-best overall prospect at that level, according to Scout.com.
"He comes from an unbelievable JC program," said Allen Wallace, the California-based national recruiting editor for Scout.com. "He's a play-maker — instinctive, tough and big."
The Buckeyes have 20 commitments in the 2006 class, which is ranked eighth by Scout.com and ninth by Rivals.com.
The group includes highly touted linebackers Thaddeus Gibson of Euclid (rated ninth at the position by Scout.com), Mark Johnson of Los Angeles (12th), Ross Homan of Coldwater (14th) and Tyler Moeller of Cincinnati (23rd).
Two other players are considering the Buckeyes but decided to wait until Signing Day today to announce their decisions: Louisville defensive lineman Corey Peters and Orlando receiver Greg Mathews.

Linebacker Larry Grant committed to Ohio State yesterday, and if he ends up being the final member of the Ohio State recruiting class, the Buckeyes can say they ended on a high note.

Grant, originally from Norcross, Ga., by way of City College of San Francisco, is considered among the top junior-college linebacker prospects. With that in mind, he said there was no doubt why he picked Ohio State over Oregon and a couple of other schools.

"It’s ‘Linebacker University,’ " he said.

The Buckeyes still were waiting for word from defensive lineman Corey Peters of Louisville (Ky.) Central and receiver Greg Mathews of Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater. But incidations were that they would go elsewhere.
Even if the Buckeyes lose them, coach Jim Tressel and his staff certainly will be pleased with the class. Although the Buckeyes waved goodbye to their three senior starting linebackers, including All-American and Lombardi Award winner A.J. Hawk, today they are expected to welcome five highly touted linebackers among the 20-member class.

A- Coach Rush: Well I have to watch tape on him, I not necessarily watching Larry, I'd like to say defensively as a whole I'm proud of our defense they did a great job, Larry is the leader of our defense I would say he comes up with big plays at opportune times so I'm real happy with him.

Defensively I was extremely impressed with LB Larry Grant this kid is the real deal, excellent vision, excellent lateral movement, excellent recovery speed and awareness. Numerous sacks, 2 interceptions, 1 tipped pass for an interception by SS Tony Cade, 1 blocked punt for a TD!! Just another day at work for this solider, he will make some noise at the next level!!<o:p></o:p>

Player to watch this fall: Ohio State LB Larry Grant. A junior college star at City College of San Francisco, Grant originally committed to Florida last fall but didn't meet SEC academic requirements. He signed with Ohio State and likely will start spring practice at middle linebacker. Four years ago, Florida went through a similar situation with junior college LB Lance Mitchell, who eventually signed with Oklahoma and became an All-American.
