LB Larry Grant (Official Thread)

Fighting for a job

LB Larry Grant: This is Grant?s second go with the 49ers ? who selected him in the seventh round of the 2008 draft ? after he was plucked off San Francisco?s practice squad by St. Louis during his rookie season. Grant lasted three years with the Rams and even started eight games for them last season before being released last month. He?s a solid player who also can contribute on special teams, and the 49ers had him listed second on their initial depth chart behind NaVorro Bowman at inside linebacker ? and ahead of Scott McKillop, who was expected to be Bowman?s top challenger this year. Grant has a decent shot at the final roster, but he also could get caught up in a numbers game with McKillop, Costanzo and Keaton Kristick also competing for the two roster berths behind Bowman and Willis. The deciding factor could come down to prowess on special teams, where the other three candidates have excelled in the past.

Bigger, smarter Grant taking advantage of second chance in SF

When Larry Grant left the 49ers in 2008 he was an underweight rookie linebacker overmatched by the demands of the position.

He returns three years later a changed man. Grant has put on 15 pounds since the 49ers took him in the seventh-round of the NFL draft and now weighs about 250 pounds. But he said the biggest gains have come inside his head.

"The best thing that could have happened to me leaving San Francisco as a rookie was going to the defensive scheme in St. Louis," said Grant, who spent the last two seaons running Steve Spagnuolo' defense with the Rams. "It's one of the hardest systems in the league. Coming back here, it's not an easy system to learn, but I've adapted to digging deeper into defenses."

Grant (Foothill High) is listed as the second-team "Ted" linebacker behind NaVorro Bowman and ahead of Scott McKillop. After signing with the 49ers last week, he immediately saw action with the first-string unit when Bowman sat out a couple of practices with a minor injury.

The 49ers released Grant at the end of training camp in 2008 because he wasn't physical enough for their liking at the "Ted" position and because they had recently signed veteran Takeo Spikes to play the position. Now Grant is the veteran acquisition.

"I've been a very good studier of the game in the last three years," he said. "It just seems like my confidence is a lot higher. I feel a lot better now with my confidence and my strength. I've adjusted tremendously to the speed of the game."

49ers notes: Foothill alum Grant plays well for injured Willis

SAN FRANCISCO ? The 49ers' defense threw its first shutout of the season despite its best player watching from the sideline with a pulled hamstring.

Linebacker Patrick Willis suffered the injury in the first quarter while attempting to tackle Rams fullback Brit Miller. Miller broke through the attempt and finished with an 18-yard gain. Willis, meanwhile, ended up on the grass surrounded by teammates and trainers.

The injury is not believed to be serious, although coach Jim Harbaugh said it would be "a couple of days" before the 49ers can assess the severity. Willis watched the rest of the game from a standing position, and he walked slowly to and from the locker room at halftime.

What was clear is the 49ers have a capable backup.

Larry Grant, who played the last three seasons with the Rams, entered at the end of the first quarter and finished tied with fellow inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman for the team lead in tackles, six total. Grant's playing time this season has come almost exclusively on special teams, and he had only one tackle entering Sunday's game.

Grant also had one of four 49ers sacks against the Rams, two tackles behind the line of scrimmage and a quarterback hit on A.J. Feeley, who had X-rays on his right thumb after the game.

Grant is the top backup for both Willis and Bowman, and he has to know both positions each week. In substituting for Willis, Grant also wore the radio receiver in his helmet and called out the defensive plays to his teammates.

"The good thing is that I've played both sides since training camp just in case something like this happened to either one of them," said Grant, who played at Foothill High School.

"I'm just glad it wasn't a bad (injury) to Pat. Because we need Pat back with us going into these next couple of games and into the playoffs."

Said Willis of Grant: "For him to go out there and go against his former team and play the way he did ? it was phenomenal."

49ers? Larry Grant makes a lasting impression

Linebacker Larry Grant (54) celebrates after tackling St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson during the fourth quarter.

Jim Harbaugh says backup inside linebacker Larry Grant has a "high level of contact courage."

What does that mean? Ask Rams running back Steven Jackson.

On the last play of the third quarter in Sunday's 26-0 win over St. Louis, Grant left a lasting impression on Jackson, stuffing him for no gain with a tackle that had Grant's helmet flying, his teammates whooping and Fox announcer Tim Ryan saying, prior to a replay of the collision, "Listen to this."

"When he hit Steven Jackson, it was exciting," said left tackle Alex Boone, Grant's teammate for two seasons at Ohio State. "It got the sidelines up. Everyone was excited again."

Grant played most of Sunday's game because of a hamstring injury Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis sustained in the first quarter. And it appears Grant will reprise his fill-in role when San Francisco (10-2) visits the Cardinals (5-7) on Sunday. According to ESPN, Willis has a Grade 2 hamstring strain and could miss "a little time." Hamstring strains are graded on a scale of 1 to 3, with 3 being the most severe.

"Nobody wants to get hurt," Willis said after Sunday's game. "But for (Grant) to play th

San Francisco 49ers' Larry Grant makes hard-hitting impression subbing for injured Patrick Willis

Larry Grant drove out of Candlestick Park at twilight Sunday and met up with his family, nearby at his Auntie Kimi's house.

"I go up there after every home game just to talk to them, eat dinner," Grant said. "I always go back."

Some 49ers teammates went to nightclubs to celebrate a 26-0 win over St. Louis that clinched a NFC West championship. Some went to teammates' houses to rejoice.

Grant didn't abandon his San Francisco roots, having spent part of his childhood in the rough Hunters Point neighborhood.

"It felt good, just being able to come back home. San Francisco is my hometown," Grant said. "All my friends and family were watching (Sunday's win).

"It meant a lot for me to go out there, be able to play and do some good things for my team."

Grant was summoned off the sideline to replace none other than the 49ers' marquee player, linebacker Patrick Willis, in the first quarter of arguably the franchise's most noteworthy win in nine seasons.

Grant produced six tackles, including a sack and a helmet-jarring tackle for no gain. He is ready to reprise his role Sunday at Arizona if Willis cannot play because of a strained hamstring, an injury that kept Willis out of Wednesday's practice.

49ers notes: Grant is eager to step in for hurt Willis

SANTA CLARA ? Larry Grant says he's looking forward to proving one of the best defenses in the league won't suffer any lapses without its top player.

Linebacker Patrick Willis, who left last Sunday's game in the first quarter with a right hamstring strain, officially was listed as questionable on the team's injury report Friday. But he did not take part in practice this week, hasn't resumed running and is a long shot to play against the Cardinals on Sunday.

That means Grant figures to make his first 49ers start. Grant played more than three quarters against the Rams and finished tied for the team lead in tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage and a quarterback sack.

"Playing for Pat Willis is a big thing for anybody," Grant said. "He is the best in the game today. But I don't feel any pressure. I just know if I play my game I should be fine."
