LB Larry Grant (Official Thread)

Another defensive bright spot was linebacker Larry Grant. Not only did he stand out on special teams ? creating a highlight with a decleater of Minnesota?s Asher Allen on a punt return ? he recorded four tackles, including two for a loss, and had a pair of pass breakups. Still, the third-year vet from Ohio State isn?t content with his performance as he battles fellow Buckeyes Bobby Carpenter and Na?il Diggs for a starting job.

?It?s a long process and I know that if you want to be a great player, it takes awhile to get there,? Grant said. ?I want to do whatever I can to become the player that I want to be.?

Rams' Grant likes new spot at weakside linebacker
Associated Press
Published: August 17, 2010

ST. LOUIS (AP) The St. Louis Rams figure to open the season with an all-Ohio State linebacking crew. Larry Grant may be one of the more unsung former Buckeyes, but he's coming off a big game in the preseason opener.

In a 28-7 opening loss against Minnesota on Saturday, the 6-foot-1, 251-pound Grant had four tackles, including one for a loss, two passes defended and a special teams tackle.

The 25-year-old definitely caught coach Steve Spagnuolo's eye.

"Larry showed up in the game. He's done some versatile things," Spagnuolo said. "Anytime you can do that, you help yourself as a linebacker and you help yourself as a team."

That's music to Grant's ears.

"It's working out," Grant said. "I did my best. Everything, I'm picking up a lot better. If you do what you're supposed to be doing, everything will fall into place."

That's to be expected in any player's second full season with a team. Grant learned the system installed by Rams defensive coordinator Ken Flajole last year is more comfortable in it this preseason.

It's been a slow climb for Grant.

The San Francisco 49ers drafted Grant in the seventh round after he played two seasons at Ohio State. Before joining the Buckeyes he spent two years at City College of San Francisco, where he was the national junior college player of the year. In four college seasons, Grant played in four national championship games.

He was signed to the Rams' active roster from San Francisco's practice squad on Nov. 26, 2008 and saw action in two games on special teams. Last year, Grant played mostly on the special teams, seeing action in all 16 games during a 1-15 season.

In training camp, Grant has made the move from strongside to weakside linebacker. He is on the first-team defense with fellow Ohio State teammates in middle linebacker James Laurinaitis and free-agent pickup Na'il Diggs at strongside linebacker.

"We all have the same tradition," Grant said of his college teammates. "Being at Ohio State, they taught us to learn to love football a lot more."

Grant's Focus Paying Off

Grant_Feature1_81953.jpg

Larry Grant and James Laurinaitis have been teammates and friends for a long time and they count each other amongst their closest in both regards.

But perhaps maybe they?ve been roommates for too long.

?Larry and I have been rooming together since back in the college days on game days and stuff,? Laurinaitis said, laughing. ?Yeah, we get sick of each other very easily. It?s kind of like being brothers where you are around each other all the time and you?re going to say stuff you don?t mean just top get under his skin. I enjoy it, though.?

Laurinaitis says he gets tired of Grant?s penchant for talking on the phone all the time, especially when he?s trying to sleep.

Of course, Grant says Laurinaitis has ways to get under his skin, also.

?Everyone has their days, that?s all I can say,? Grant said, a sly smile creeping across his face. ?Of course, he?s like a brother. Being in the same room, two grown men who have basically been brothers for a long time, we have our days.?

When told that they sound like an old married couple, Grant couldn?t help but needle his pal.

?I wouldn?t marry James,? Grant said, laughing. ?He?s not that attractive.?

Jokes aside, the Rams have to be plenty attracted to what they have seen from the Ohio State duo in this training camp. And though Laurinaitis already carried with him the cache of a terrific rookie season and the label of defensive leader entering camp, it?s Grant that has been perhaps this preseason?s most pleasant surprise.

In Saturday night?s opener against Minnesota, Grant was all over the field on defense and special teams and his performance proved to coach Steve Spagnuolo that the faith the coaching staff has showed could pay off.

?Larry showed up in the game,? Spagnuolo said. ?He?s done some versatile things here where he has played the WIL in the base package and also been doing some stuff in the nickel package. Anytime you can do that, you help yourself.?

Grant gives Rams strong play at linebacker

Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo gives instruction to linebacker Larry Grant during practice Friday morning at Rams Park in Earth City.
Robert Cohen [email protected]

When Alex Barron was traded to the Dallas Cowboys for Bobby Carpenter in May, it became clear that the Rams would start an all-Ohio State linebacker corps this season: Carpenter and Na'il Diggs on the outside and James Laurinaitis in the middle.

Well, the Rams do have three ex-Buckeyes in their starting lineup at linebacker. But in one of the surprises of training camp so far, it's Larry Grant who is teamed with Diggs and Laurinaitis on the first-team defense.

There was no big announcement or pep talk from the coaches to announce Grant's promotion. When the coaching staff displayed the defensive depth chart at start of camp, Grant's name was listed as the starting weakside linebacker. That's how he found out.

But the question remained, would Grant have staying power as a starter?

During the first day training camp practice in full pads, Grant made his presence felt with a couple of jarring hits. He continued to throw his weight around on the practice field at Rams Park. But could he transfer it to game day in the preseason opener against Minnesota?

Well, on the second Donnie Jones punt of the night, Grant delivered what some in the business call a "de-cleater" on Minnesota return man Asher Allen. Allen was knocked off his feet ? or off his cleats, if you will ? on a crushing hit by Grant.

"It felt real good," Grant said, smiling. "It was perfect, actually."

Rams linebackers backing Ohio State this weekend
BY BILL COATS [email protected]

It's Illinois vs. second-ranked Ohio State on Saturday in Champaign, Ill., with the Illibuck Trophy at stake.

The Illibuck Trophy?

"It's a big trophy, a big turtle," said Larry Grant (Class of 2007), one of the Rams' three starting linebackers from Ohio State. "Whoever wins the game takes the Illibuck home."

That's been the tradition since 1925 in the series, which Ohio State leads 62-30-4 (the Buckeyes are 58-23-2 with the Illibuck at stake).
"They beat me on my Senior Day," Grant grumbled. "I've always had a big chip on my shoulder about that."

St. Louis Rams Linebacker Larry Grant, Joins Tony Gonzalez's All Pro Science as Athlete Endorser
Posted by Editor
Thursday, 25 November 2010

All Pro Science, Inc. and its President, Co-Founder, as well as current Atlanta Falcon tight end Tony Gonzalez announce that Larry Grant of the St. Louis Rams has been added as an athlete endorser for APS. TEAM APS includes top athletes such as NFL greats Warren Moon, Will Shields, Devin McCourty, Eben Britton, and Jason McCourty. MLB All Star Troy Tulowitzki and LA's top yoga instructor Alanna Zabel are also among TEAM APS's notable athletes. APS athletes are not paid, but instead often approach the company themselves, to be a part of its unique and wholesome message.

"We are excited to have Larry onboard. Larry, is a winner, pure and simple," says APS President and Co-founder Tony Gonzalez. "He's won in junior college, at Ohio State, and will do so in the pros. He knows what it takes to succeed. As a champion on the field, we're excited to have him team with the champions of all-natural nutrition, and we're confident that we'll be a winning combination."

Grant attended City College of San Francisco before finishing his career at Ohio State. In 2005, Larry was named JUCO National Player of the Year. He played in four straight national championship games (two at City College and two at Ohio State). For his entire collegiate career, Grant started 38 of 49 games he played in, registering 244 tackles (162 solos) with 15.5 sacks and 30.5 stops for losses. He caused eight fumbles, recovered three others and had nine pass break-ups. Also, he gained 131 yards on eight interception returns and blocked 15 kicks, returning three blocked punts for a total of 84 yards and a touchdown. He was drafted by the 49ers in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Grant was then signed in 2009 by the St. Louis Rams. Midway through the 2010 season, Grant has 18 tackles and 2 forced fumbles for the Rams.

The Rams also have tendered all three exclusive rights free agents, or players with fewer than three years experience: defensive end C.J. Ah You, wide receiver Danny Amendola and linebacker Larry Grant. Cornerback Marquis Johnson, who also would have been an exclusive rights free agent, already has re-signed with the team.

If the labor agreement expires tonight, the Rams no longer will be able to negotiate with their own unrestricted free agents until there's a new agreement. The team has been talking with the agent for wide receiver Mark Clayton, but it's iffy at best that a new contract can be worked out by tonight.

As I mentioned above, I asked Larry Grant about his thoughts on the situation with Coach Jim Tressel's resignation and the world of college football. What was his reaction to the news?

Pretty surprised. I was pretty sad about everything too. Terrelle Pryor is a big man for doing what he did, apologizing to everybody and saying some of the things he said. It was very unfortunate that Coach Tressel has to step down and things had to turn out this way. The state of Ohio and the city of Columbus and Buckeye Nation loves Coach Tressel and we?re behind him with everything that he does. Whatever he route he takes in his future, we wish him the best. Great man, great father figure to all the boys that he coached. Everybody learned a lot from him.

We?re still excited about Coach Fickell. It?s been a long time coming for Coach Fick as well. He got his dream job. From a guy that played under Coach Fickell, if everybody buys into his system and what he wants to do, the sky?s the limit for the Buckeyes. Even with all the sanctions going on, Coach Fickell is going to lead that team as if they?re going to the national championship every year. And everybody?s going to see the difference of the play from the guys this year and the guys last year.

As NCAA scandals often do, this one provoked a short-lived dialog about the disconnect between the money wrapped up in college football and the players on the field, who don't make any. I ask Grant whether or not that seemed like a disconnect.

I never really saw it as a disconnect. You?re really blessed. It?s not guaranteed that everybody gets a scholarship to a school like Ohio State. It?s a priveldge to get that scholarship. A lot of players take advantage and embrace the fact that they got that scholarship. They use it and they go to school; they graduate. But some players get kind of selfish and want to do certain things for money. I think a lot of players and student athletes in college embrace the fact that they have a scholarship.

Our back is against the wall because, of course, everybody wants to make money now, but at the end of the day we have a full scholarship to graduate at a very prestigious university, whichever one it may be. The majority of players embrace that fact.

I had to ask about whether or not playing with his former Ohio State teammate James Laurinaitis made a difference and whether or not having a steady group of OSU players at LB, including Na'il Diggs, had an impact.

It's a good thing to talk about and a good feeling to be out there with two other Ohio State linebackers. With me and James playing together at Ohio State, it actually has helped us out a lot. Our communication is a lot different and seems to be pretty good at times compared to a lot of other people.

With Diggs being in that tradition of an Ohio State linebacker...we never really got to communicate with him per se because he was a long time before us, but he is the head guy in our linebacking group. Everybody always plays off of James, but when it comes to getting in that room and speaking to each other, man, Diggs is the guy. He's basically the granddaddy of the group that takes care of everything.

grant is being let go

Teams can't officially cut players until Thursday afternoon. But already players are being informed that they're going to be released.

That number includes Rams linebacker Larry Grant. The Rams had exclusive rights to Grant and tendered him a contract offer in March. The club rescinded the tender so that Grant could "maybe hook on with another team," coach Steve Spagnuolo said.

The 6-foot-1, 251-pound Grant, 26, spent three seasons with the Rams. The Ohio State product appeared in all 16 games last year, with eight starts.

Former 49ers LB Grant signals his return

The 49ers have yet to make a big splash in free agency -- perhaps you've noticed? -- but they might be creating a slight ripple with the apparent signing of Rams inside linebacker Larry Grant.

Grant's apparent move was signaled this morning through the Twitter account of the former star at City College of San Francisco: "One door closes another opens," Grant wrote "... Another shot back in My city folks. Let's Get it ... San Francisco here I come ..."

A team spokesman did not confirm that Grant had signed with the 49ers.

Grant, 26, a seventh-round draft pick of the Niners in 2008, was cut by San Francisco after spending the early part his rookie season on the practice squad. He's spent the past three seasons in St. Louis, starting eight games and collecting 24 tackles and two sacks in 2010. Grant did not start during his first two seasons with the Rams. After the lockout, St. Louis rescinded the tender they had offered him in March.

With the loss of free-agent Takeo Spikes to the Chargers, Grant, if signed, could push NaVorro Bowman for the starting spot next to Patrick Willis.
