LB Larry Grant (Official Thread)

Linebacker Larry Grant, another Ohio State alum, also was roommates with Laurinaitis and could resist getting in a few digs on his former teammate.

"I've never smelt a person so bad in my life as Laurinaitis," Grant said straight-faced. "I've never had to walk into a room, open every window, leave the door open because of this guy."

Grant's humor also preceded a lot of praise. "He's definitely not at the stature of Justin Smith," he said. "But as a linebacker -- he doesn't take a play off. He's a guy that you definitely would love to have on your team. He's going to line everybody up, get everybody put in the right places for sure, and at the snap of the ball he's going to go. It doesn't matter where it goes, he's going to be part of that play."

Ex-Ram Grant finds a home with hometown 49ers
By Jim Thomas [email protected]

NEW ORLEANS ? At the start of the 2010 season, Larry Grant was part of an all-Ohio State starting linebacker corps with the Rams, one that included James Laurinaitis and Na?il Diggs.

All told Grant started 12 games that season, registering 24 tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble. He was tendered as an exclusive rights after that season, but at the end of the NFL lockout the following summer, the Rams removed the tender ? in effect releasing Grant at the start of the training camp in 2011.

Grant didn?t stay unemployed for long, signing a couple of days later with the San Francisco 49ers.

?There ain?t nothing better than playing for the hometown team,? said Grant, who?s from nearby Santa Rosa, Calif.

The hometown team is in the Super Bowl this Sunday, so Grant couldn?t be happier.

?It was another opportunity to finish what I started,? said Grant who entered the league in ?08 as a seventh-round draft choice of the 49ers.

He was signed off San Francisco?s practice squad late in ?08, and appeared in 34 games in two-plus seasons in St. Louis before having the tender rescinded at the start of Steve Spagnuolo?s third and final season as Rams head coach.

?Actually, it?s turned out for the best,? Grant said. ?I?m at the highest point any player can be at right now ? the Super Bowl. And God willing, in a couple days we?ll be holding the trophy up.?

Strictly an inside linebacker in San Francisco?s 3-4 scheme, Grant has played special teams almost exclusively this season and had only six tackles in the regular season.

?Of course everybody wants to play, but I know my role here,? Grant said. ?They?ve got the two best guys in the business in front of me. I?ll get my opportunity one day.?

Some 49ers already played for a title in the dome

BRETT MARTEL AP Sports Writer Published: February 1, 2013

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- San Francisco defensive tackle Ricky Jean Francois made one of his greatest football memories to date in the Superdome, where he won a national championship with LSU against Ohio State in January 2008.

Jean Francois also was voted MVP of that game, an honor that disrupted his celebration after he had climbed into the stands to see his family.

"They had to get a lot of the guys to grab me out of the stands to bring me back down, but it was a good moment when I got a chance to hold that crystal ball and see that confetti," Jean Francois said.

As it turns out, the 49ers also are staying in the same hotel and using some of the same meeting rooms that LSU used leading up to the Tigers' BCS triumph.

The memories are not so fond for a couple other 49ers who were in that same title game, but playing for the Buckeyes.

"I don't want to hear it," linebacker Larry Grant said when asked whether the sight of the Superdome brings back bad memories. "All I'm thinking about is hoisting that Lombardi Trophy in a few days."

Grant said Jean Francois had not said a word to him about the game recently.

"He doesn't want to bring that up with me," Grant said. "I might slap him in the face."

Free Agent Focus with Insider insight: LB Larry Grant
By Levi Damien on Mar 2 2013

Since last off-season, when Larry Grant was a restricted free agent, there were many who were calling for the Raiders to pick him up and give up a late round pick. That obviously didn't happen and now Grant is set to become a unrestricted free agent which means if the Raiders want him, there are no strings attached.

Raiders' defensive coordinator, Jason Tarver, is quite familiar with Larry Grant. He coached him as a linebackers coach with the 49ers three seasons ago.

Grant has been a backup much of his career in San Francisco behind the All Pro duo of Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman. It may be time for a change of scenery and a short trip across the bay could be just the change he needs.

The Raiders are extremely thin at linebacker and it could be they have no one to fill the middle linebacker spot with the expected cutting of Rolando McClain and his 2012 replacement Omar Gaither probably let go as a free agent. Grant could prove as solid a replacement as any.

Here is was David Fucillo, from 49ers blog, Niners Nation had to say about Larry Grant:

Role: In 2012, Larry Grant was almost exclusively a special teams player. He is the primary backup at inside linebacker, but with Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman ahead of him, there was little opportunity other than some mop-up duty late in games. In 2011, Grant did get three starts late in 2011 when Willis suffered a hamstring injury. Grant was very solid in his place.

Strengths: Grant is a fantastic special teams player for the 49ers. As a linebacker, while not as strong an athlete as Willis or Bowman, he can make the needed tackles, and can be a solid play inside. He is not a No. 1 inside/middle linebacker, but appears to be a solid complementary option.

Weaknesses: He is not as athletic as the better linebackers in the league, so there is concern that he could get worn down in an every-down role.

Likelihood to test market: I think it is virtually guaranteed the 49ers let him test the market. If he signs somewhere else, there would be more concern about his loss as a special teams player than as an inside linebacker.

LB Larry Grant suspended first four games of season

Larry Grant, who showed he was a starting-caliber linebacker when he filled in well for injured Patrick Willis in 2011, has only received tepid interest as a free agent. On Friday, the league revealed why.

Grant has been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances. Grant (Foothill High) has made free-agent visits to the Chiefs and Patriots but has not signed with any teams. Despite the suspension, Grant is able to take part in offseason practices and preseason games once he signs with a team.

Grant started three games at the end of 2011 and finished with 39 tackles and a forced fumble that preserved a win in Seattle. He mostly played special teams for the 49ers in 2012, recording a blocked punt in a blowout win over the Jets.

Grant's agent declined comment.

Larry Grant apologizes for PED suspension
Linebacker remains a free agent Brad Biggs
May 28, 2013

Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Larry Grant, who has been suspended for the first regular-season games in 2013 for violating the NFL?s policy on performance-enhancing drugs, has apologized.

Grant, who remains a free agent at this time, was suspended on April 19. More than a month later, he?s hoping to put the issue behind him and said he never knowingly took a banned substance.

?I've waited far too long to say my apologies to my children, my family, and friends, the 49ers organization, the Buckeye nation, and my fans,? Grant said in a statement, according to NFL.com. ?Failing a drug test is far out of my character and although I never knowingly took a performance enhancing drug I take full responsibility for what goes in my body and more importantly for the embarrassment of a failed drug test.

?It's my goal by issuing this statement to clear my name and more importantly to be judged by what happens to me in the future. I hope that my family, my football family, all my fans, and Niner Empire can forgive me for this situation and I look forward to a successful 2013 season.?

Grant, who also spent three seasons with the St. Louis Rams, will have to find a team to have a successful 2013 season. We?ll see what shakes out for him moving forward. Grant primarily played special teams last season. In 2011, he started three games for the Niners and performed well, recording 39 tackles.

Grant played 16 games for the 49ers last season and was primarily a special teams player. He started three games for San Francisco in 2011 and previously spent three seasons with the Rams, for whom he made eight starts.
