St. Ignatius senior LB Kyle Berger will miss the 2013 season with a knee injury.-(The Plain Dealer)
CLEVELAND, Ohio - St. Ignatius' All-Ohio senior linebacker Kyle Berger, an Ohio State recruit, will miss the 2013 football season after suffering a knee injury according to Wildcats coach Chuck Kyle.

Berger injured his left knee midway through the first quarter of a scrimmage Aug. 24 at Canton McKinley, Kyle said.

"He wasn't even hit. He was running to make a tackle and he felt something pop," Kyle said.

Berger becomes the second senior captain for St. Ignatius to suffer a season-ending injury prior to Week 1. Senior quarterback Peter Mahoney broke his ankle on the first day of contact drills Aug. 10.

Berger underwent an MRI on Monday and met Tuesday with doctors at the Cleveland Clinic, his coach said.

"Right now our focus is on Kyle in this situation," Chuck Kyle said. "He needs his teammates and his classmates to encourage him on. He loved playing for us and with his teammates."

Berger was among the leading candidates for defensive player of the year in Ohio, according to his coach. Also a starter in basketball for the Wildcats, Berger will likely miss the entire season on the court as well.

"It's just a shame," Kyle said. "His senior year is sorta taken away from him athletically."

Berger, who verbally committed to Ohio State in April, had received offers from several major college programs including Alabama and Notre Dame. Coach Kyle said the injury would not affect Berger's scholarship offer from Ohio State.

"He'll be fine by the time he has to report to Ohio State. I'm sure he'll have a nice career." Kyle said

At 5:30 p.m. a resolute Berger summed up his feelings with a succinct post on Twitter.

Guys, I must confess.... this injury was my fault. We were going to go to the game, since St. Iggy was actually coming down to Stark County (other than state finals, of course). At the last minute, we decided not to go because it was the last scrimmage of the year and no way were Berger and EGW going to take many snaps just one week before the season started. Had I been at the scrimmage, he certainly would have been on the sideline in street clothes for the entirety of the game.

Really sad to hear this, I know Kyle was geared up to help Iggy win a title. Fantastic HS player but good luck with your recovery, help be a leader at Iggy from the sidelines, and then come ready to play your best football yet in Columbus Kyle.

Inside look at Ohio State pledge Kyle Berger's life after his ACL tear: Buckeyes recruiting

Ohio State pledge and St. Ignatius senior Kyle Berger Ohio State 2014 oral commitment and St. Ignatius senior Kyle Berger talks about coming back from his ACL tear and why he chose to pledge to Ohio State. By Ari Wasserman, Northeast Ohio Media Group

CLEVELAND, Ohio – On the bright side, Kyle Berger is allowed to wear sweatpants to a school that has a very strict dress code. On this day, he wore them with Sperry’s Top-Sider boat shoes, his white socks exposed and all.

He smiles while gazing at his friends as he uses crutches to walk through the hallways at St. Ignatius, a private school that requires its students to wear a dress shirt, dress pants and a tie every day.

It’s the little things that are getting Berger through game week these days.

“Hey, at least I wore a tie,” he joked.
