I would like to see Baker replace Worley who has been solid but not near at the level of Lee's play. I think Baker has the same abilities as Lee. He simply has to be on field. To me, odd man out goes to Worley. He is good but I'm not sure he will ever be great.

Well said. Worley has made some strides this season but I think Baker brings another level to the position (and he's doing it early in his career instead of year 4 like Worley who is probably about what he's going to be at this point).

I think Baker has to at least split playing time but Worley has played well so far. I think it's not only to the team's benefit, but also Jerome's development. Chris is a great leader to learn on. That being said, Jerome has been incredible.

Stellar Play of Jerome Baker Gives Buckeyes Options

Not many teams can lose a starting linebacker to injury and then not miss a single beat when the backup steps in, but that is what has happened with the Buckeyes this season.

Junior Dante Booker sprained his MCL in the season opener against Bowling Green and since then it has been sophomore Jerome Baker manning the Will linebacker position. How has Baker fared?

Against Oklahoma he finished with seven tackles, 1.5 sacks, and he returned an interception for a touchdown. He was named the Big Ten's Co-Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. In other words, he has been hard to miss.

It has been fairly impressive, as Baker had practiced all camp at the Sam linebacker position, and didn't really work at the Will until the week leading up to the Tulsa game.

According to fellow Sam linebacker Chris Worley, however, the positions aren't all that different.

"Coach Fick’s motto is the Sam and Will are interchangeable," he explained. "We have the same base fundamentals whether you’re outside the box or inside the box for Sam and Will, whether he’s (Sam) or not. There are some minor changes when you do play Will, but the base principles are the same. So it wasn’t that difficult of a task. Just getting comfortable playing inside of the box as often. But Jerome’s a great player so it wasn’t that hard."

Not that I am any sort of expert, but I completely agree with your assessment and praise of Baker's play against the run. Baker, on at least two occasions that stick out in my mind, importantly set the edge on outside running plays, effectively turning the rusher back toward the middle of the field into the pursuit of the defense. Gotta think he grades out a champion at Meyer's press conference tomorrow.

Exactly, the only concern I had with Baker was run support and taking on blockers, but he plays so much bigger than he is. In my mind, he is a starter and one of our main playmakers on defense, he can play every down. Unreal he is only a freshman.

Jerome Baker may not start, but he’s one of the best players on the field.

Starting linebacker Dante Booker has now missed four consecutive games with a sprained knee. Baker has done everything in his power to seize the starting job in his absence. He’s second on the team with 26 total tackles, has 3.5 tackles for a loss and was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after he had seven tackles and a pick-six against Oklahoma. Baker was all over the field again versus the Hoosiers and displayed his unnerving speed on the run below:

Ohio State’s Jerome Baker just might beat Wisconsin by himself if he has to

Wisconsin’s high rank disguises an offense that can’t withstand a player like Baker.

Ohio State will get one of its stiffest tests of the season’s first half when the Buckeyes travel to Madison’s Camp Randall Stadium to take on the No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers. The Badgers, owners of a 4-1 record, are coming off of a bye week after dismantling Michigan State in early October.

Give Wisconsin credit: it’s not their fault that Sparty and LSU have been exposed as paper tigers. What would have counted as two quality wins in most other years feels like so much smoke in this one. Either way, the Badgers went into both contests and did what they had to do, and while they looked wholly unimpressive against lowly Georgia State, their performance the rest of the season has made them look like contenders for a berth in the Big Ten championship game.

There’s only one problem. Wisconsin’s defense has been outrageously good this season—like Ohio State, they’ve got a little brother with a famous last name taking care of business—but that defensive stinginess has covered up for an offense that’s one of the least explosive and least efficient in the FBS. That’s bad news for the Badgers, who will be up against a Buckeye unit that has yet to allow a rushing touchdown and has smothered the life out of five straight opponents.

A player with the skill set to make sure the same happens this Saturday? Linebacker Jerome Baker.

Baker, who plays outside linebacker, wasn’t supposed to be a starter on this year’s team. But after a knee injury to Dante Booker, who has now missed four straight games, it’s been Baker stepping up and shutting down opposing offenses next to Raekwon McMillan and Chris Worley.

Baker’s lateral speed and tackling ability are part of the reason why the Buckeyes still haven’t allowed a rushing touchdown in 2016, the only team in the FBS who can say so. There’s a decent chance they keep that streak alive this Saturday, given what Wisconsin has done—or hasn’t done—on offense this year.
