OSU redshirt senior linebacker Etienne Sabino fields questions from the media during Big Ten Media Days Aug. 26 in Chicago.
With a faster game and a different lifestyle, the transition for some student-athletes from high school to college can be steep.
That might have been the case for Ohio State linebacker Etienne Sabino, who arrived for the Buckeyes? 2008 season at age 17.
Not only was Sabino a teenager, but he also began his first camp under former Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel with the distinction of being rated both a four and five-star recruit, according to Rivals.com and Scout.com, respectively, and all the expectations that come along with it.
Now a redshirt senior, Sabino said the transition for the Buckeyes? 2008 season forced him to rush the maturation process.
?I think maybe it forced me to grow up a little faster,? Sabino said.
Growth on the field was slow for Sabino in 2008 ? he saw action in all 13 games for a Buckeyes team that finished 10-3 and advanced to the Fiesta Bowl against Texas, but managed only six tackles on the year.
Six tackles for a five-star recruit caused some in Buckeye Nation to question Sabino?s ability, but not anymore.
The North Miami Beach, Fla., native is a captain of the 2012 Buckeyes, and a leader both in the weight room and on the field.
As a captain, he?s excited for the defensive responsibility that rests on his 6-foot-3, 237-pound frame, and could finally be ready to make good on the the potential he arrived in Columbus with.
As far as not meeting the expectations of some in prior seasons, first-year assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator Everett Withers absolved Sabino of any underperforming during a Monday press conference at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
?Well, when you say ?underperformed? ? we?ve hit restart around here. Maybe that was last year,? Withers said. ?He?s had a pretty good camp for us so far.?

Buckeyes seek motivation from different 'end game'
By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch Thursday August 30, 2012
Kyle Robertson | Dispatch
With the Buckeyes ineligible for the Big Ten championship game and a bowl game, senior linebacker Etienne Sabino faces seeing his college career end on Nov. 24 against Michigan.
Amid the buzz of revival under Urban Meyer, it is the one black cloud.
They do their best to ignore it, to push it away, to forge ahead anyway.
But it exists, even if they don?t have to confront it for the next 12 weeks.
For the first time since 1913, their first official Big Ten season, the Buckeyes will enter today?s season opener against Miami University knowing that they can neither win a conference championship nor play in a bowl game.
The Buckeyes? season will end Nov.24 when they play Michigan. The NCAA?s postseason ban was part of the sanctions imposed for the tattoo-and-memorabilia scandal. In addition to a bowl, the ban also means they aren?t eligible to play in the Big Ten championship game.
Players have had a consistent response to questions about motivation in light of having a ceiling placed on their season. They say it hasn?t really changed anything, other than make them more determined to make the most of the 12 games they do have. It?s at the root of what Meyer means when he speaks of having an ?angry? football team.
?When we first found out about it, it was kind of tough,? senior cornerback Travis Howard said. ?But it pushed everyone to want to ruin everyone else?s season. We?ve got a chip on our shoulder.?

Pretty powerful stuff. Great words about Etienne, who had a fine game against Sparty. It's hard for me to say he's not my favorite player on the team. I have conversations with him like I would a coach.

Ohio State linebacker Etienne Sabino now a 'grown man': Buckeyes Football Insider
Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
October 04, 2012
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Among the ways a player can really get on Urban Meyer's good side is by sharing some hard truths. The Ohio State coach likes to get to the point.
?The thing with coach Meyer is honesty,? fifth-year senior linebacker and captain Etienne Sabino said. ?He really likes that. I keep it real with him and he keeps it real with me. We have that respect for each other and I think it's helping us.?
Another way is to play good football. Sabino was named the Buckeyes' defensive player of the game against Michigan State after recording eight tackles and a sack in what he agreed with his best game in the scarlet and gray.
?I think it was,? Sabino said. ?I felt great out there.?
Put those together, and you can get Meyer to say something like this.
"It's hard for me to say he's not my favorite player on this team. He hasn't played a lot. I didn't realize that until I went back and did a study on it. He hasn't played a lot. He's been a classic underachiever. Now he's a leader. He's a grown man. I have conversations with him like I would a coach. I listen to him. I usually don't listen a lot, and then I listen to him. He also plays his best game against a team like that. That just shows you his growth.?

Sabino injured
Ohio State?s thin linebackers corps lost a key member when Etienne Sabino suffered a leg injury in the first quarter and did not return.?When Etienne got hurt, we tried to put it on our back,? sophomore linebacker Ryan Shazier said. ?We try to do it for our brother because we?re here for each other no matter what, and we'll always be there for each other.?Shazier also suffered a bruised knee but was able to keep playing. Middle linebacker Storm Klein stayed on the field in nickel situations, and Joshua Perry and Curtis Grant also saw playing time. Klein had seven tackles, including a 12-yard sack. Shazier had 11 tackles, including two for losses.
I didn't see the play either; I'm with you in hoping the injury isn't serious.buckeyes_rock;2229684; said:Hope Sabino isn't seriously hurt...anyone know when/how he got hurt? I don't remember seeing him limp off the field...

Josh Perry didn't embarrass himself as Sabino's replacement.
