Redshirt Year Paying Dividends for Sabino This Spring
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Sometimes greatness takes time to develop.
Ohio State Defensive Coordinator Jim Heacock is hoping that?s the case for Etienne Sabino, a fourth-year linebacker out of Miami who spent last year redshirting for the Buckeyes.
?You hope he has success and you hope he comes on and becomes that player for you,? said Heacock, who enters his 15th season as an assistant at Ohio State.

?What happens a lot of times is when it?s your time, you step up. At Ohio State, with the tradition and the legacies, when it?s your time, you don?t have a choice, you?ve got to step up.?

Restless after a redshirt 2010, linebacker Etienne Sabino eager to make an impact for Ohio State this fall

"I feel like I've been here a while and I haven't done what I wanted to do yet," says OSU linebacker Etienne Sabino, who was a healthy redshirt in 2010 but could be the Buckeyes' starting middle linebacker in 2011.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- For the Ohio State defense, it's just like 2006 -- a bunch of starters gone, a bunch of holes to fill.
Co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell makes the comparison himself, mentioning that no one knew of players like James Laurinaitis and Malcolm Jenkins going into that season.
All the Buckeyes need to do, then, is find among the guys who haven't played much a future three-time All-American linebacker and a future first-round NFL Draft pick at cornerback.
After losing seven starters -- including defensive lineman Cameron Heyward, linebackers Brian Rolle and Ross Homan, safety Jermale Hines and cornerback Chimdi Chekwa -- the OSU defense doesn't just need players, but playmakers.
Expect junior John Simon and senior Nathan Williams to get after people on the defensive line. Tyler Moeller, C.J. Barnett and Christian Bryant should bring some excitement to the safety and star spots. Senior linebacker Andrew Sweat, back at his more natural position at weakside linebacker, has shown he can play.
But from defenders who haven't shown much so far, linebacker Etienne Sabino and cornerback Travis Howard are the ones who could potentially turn into playmakers. They were teammates at Dr. Michael Krop High School in Miami, where the late Sonny Spielman, the father of OSU legend Chris Spielman, was an assistant coach and helped plant the idea of Ohio State in their heads.
Now both are redshirt juniors, Howard taking over the No. 1 cornerback job with his biceps popping and his confidence apparent to everyone at practice. Sabino is in the lead at middle linebacker, just happy to be back on the field after taking an unusual, healthy redshirt in the middle of his career last season.
"It was probably one of the hardest years of my life, not playing at all when you're supposed to be playing a lot," Sabino said. "I feel like I've been here a while and I haven't done what I wanted to do yet."

OSU's Sabino ready to return
Linebacker took self-imposed year off
BY MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER
COLUMBUS -- Etienne Sabino made the most difficult move a football player can consider. He took himself out of the game -- all of the games -- in the 2010 season.
Sabino, one of the top-rated linebackers in the country when he came to Ohio State three years ago, saw the abundance of talent at his position as the Buckeyes prepared for last season, so he chose to sit out the full year. That allowed Sabino (6-foot-4, 240) to retain two seasons of eligibility, with the expectation that he would then be a starter and carry on the rich tradition of dominant play at this key position on the OSU defense.
"It was extremely difficult," Sabino said recently about his self-imposed eternity away from live competition. Although he continued to practice with the Buckeyes, he last played for Ohio State in the Rose Bowl win over Oregon that wrapped up the 2009 season.
"I would say it was probably one of the hardest years of my life," said Sabino, whose first name is pronounced a-t-yen. "Not playing at all, when you're used to playing a lot, it was definitely a hard thing."
