Notre Dame football recruiting: Perkins solid in choosing Ohio State
By BOB WIENEKE South Bend Tribune Staff Writer
January 19, 2012
SOUTH BEND -- As he's done since last year, Washington High School
senior David Perkins ended the school day by delivering the weather to
his fellow students.
Because of the fickle nature of winter in Michiana, there's no
guarantee that Perkins' forecast will be 100-percent accurate.
His college choice, though? That's another story.
"I'm done," Perkins said. "I'm 100 percent Ohio State."
The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder made an official visit to Columbus, Ohio,
last weekend. There had been a previous trip to Missouri, with visits
to Cal, Oregon and Illinois planned.
Not anymore.
"I went (to Columbus) thinking it was just another visit," Perkins
said. "I went there planning to take all of my visits and making a
decision around signing day."
Signing day now looks like little more than a formality. In fact,
Perkins, who on Thursday was sporting an Ohio State sweatshirt and
accentuated it with a Buckeye lanyard around his neck, seems mentally
into the next stage.
"Now that recruiting is over, now it's time for the preparation
stage," Perkins said. "I'm going to get (to Columbus) as many times as
I can before I'm officially down there and get acquainted with all the
players and get down all the things that I need to know, so I'll be
ready to come in and assume my role."
That role will be at linebacker. Many recruiting services has listed
Perkins under the "athlete" category, but new OSU coach Urban Meyer
has Perkins ticketed for linebacker.
"I remember him talking to me about that and I remember him talking to
me about how big of a piece I am in this class and for the team
because they're short on linebackers," Perkins said, "so me coming in
as a freshman, it's not like a redshirt, or just do special teams this
year. He said I'm coming in and I will be playing. There's no time to
waste."
Meyer, a former Notre Dame assistant, wasted no time in getting out to
his old stomping grounds to welcome Perkins to the fold. The former
Florida coach and new Buckeye boss was in South Bend on Wednesday.
Meyer's ties to Perkins run deeper than just a common zip code.
Washington head coach Antwon Jones played at Notre Dame when Meyer was
an assistant, as did Panthers assistants Jarvis Edison and Jay
Johnson.
And Meyer's message -- his core values -- hit home with Perkins.
"They talk to you like you're already there, like you're their child,"
said Perkins, who committed to ND last summer but during the season
decided to look elsewhere. "They tell you what they expect."
What Perkins can expect when he gets to Columbus is high expectations.
Yes, he knows the Buckeyes face a one-year bowl ban in 2012, but he's
putting a positive spin on it.
"I mean, hey, that's one season," he said. "We're going to be the
first No. 1-ranked team to not play in the national championship."
He also already has experienced via Twitter some "welcomes" from Michigan fans.
"It's bad blood there," he said. "But I'm a Buckeye, and that's what
comes with it."
FerrariEnzo;2094231; said:Me thinks that line about being the first number 1 ranked team to not play in the title game is straight from the lips of Urban Meyer. I think he flaunts confidence that elite recruits can identify with and want to be in the aura/impact of. I like it.
Sabino mentioned LB David Perkins as a young guy who has caught his eye. Raved about Perkins' speed and athleticism.
