LB Darron Lee (National Champion, Super Bowl Champion, Fugitive)

Well, it is a "2014 Highlights" video. Maybe they're saving some for the start of his "2015 Highlights" video.

EDIT: Though the 'Bama and "other" Oregon highlights sort of shoot this theory down. As you were...

I remember him having a great season but DAMN. I forgot how many TD's he had, just an absolute playmaker. To imagine him back next year 10-15 lbs. heavier is flat out scary for other teams. Unreal how he has such a killer LB mentality despite just learning the position.

Just watched the Sugar Bowl last night and found myself thinking that despite the QB depth being such an incredible story, the emergence of Lee might have been the single biggest factor in the NC run. Just an incredibly perfect time and position of need to have a player blow up out of nowhere. If you watch the last 3 games it's hard to imagine the same outcomes without Lee. Unbelievable.

There's so many stories with this team... Lee is definitely one of them, but the transformation from August to January was across the entire team. I think finding that playmaker and motivator in Lee was a big help though. Bosa is a god, but as his chosen celebration demonstrates he's very laid back. It's good to have 1 or 2 guys with Lees energy between plays. He was the x-factor play-maker on defense.

- The DE play from Frazier and Miller (pick6 against Bama was huge!)
- Eze finding his inner beast mode -- I think we all knew he'd be a good one, but he took it to another level a year early.
- The LB corps and Secondary not just turning the corner and becoming respectable, but able to carry the team at times and ending with shutting down all 3 Heisman finalists.
- The OLine gelling and going from being a liability early to a championship squad by the end
- The WR corps stepping up for both QBs. Devin and Spencer struggled to contribute with the ball in their hands at the end of 2013 and it's clear they took that personal and stepped it up. Spencer's off-the-ball play has always been Tatum-esque but it was a joy to see him contribute as a direct threat. No way Devin would've been a 2nd round pick after 2013 season. Corey, Thomas, Marshall, and Wilson all stepped up big too despite some mishaps early.
- Obviously JT and Cardale.

Looking back it almost feels like the only units that were comparable at beginning and end were the DLine outside Spence' spot, and the TEs. Everyone expected the DLine to be a strong point and they lived up to those expectations despite losing a guy. Meanwhile the TEs featured more than in years past (arguably they could feature even more... but just so many fantastic skill players)

The world may never see a team that dealt with so much adversity, started below expectations... and yet finished so utterly dominant. Seriously running roughshod over the Heisman-led favorites despite 4 turnovers !? The team that finished 2014 deserves to be mentioned with the likes of 95 Nebraska imo.

So many factors lead to the run but Lee was in the forefront in my mind. The year before last, we win the NCG with any type of defense. And while the entire defense improved, it was impossible to not see Lee lead that charge. Though his dominance was more prominent in the final stretch, it was there almost all year. I just can't wait to see what he does next, kid has already accomplished so much and I don't even know if he has hit the tip of the iceberg.

There was a lot of trepidation when RDS left and thinking there'd be a huge drop off between Lee and RDS. The major difference to me was the other 2 LBs came into their own with Lee and weren't quite there with RDS, requiring him to do more than he should. Lee had complete trust in Perry and Grant/McMillan to have his back. That trust led to Lee being able to hold his side down and sometimes being able to freelance and make a big play, knowing he had help if he missed. That was big to his development and maturation

Just from reading about the "changes" Ash brought, some of it may have been the scheme where they were able tot just play and react more than previously. Less thinking and more reacting.
