Official Site: Laurinaitis Named Finalist For Lott Trophy

Ohio State Senior Linebacker James Laurinaitis has been named one of the four finalists for the fifth annual Lott Trophy, it was announced today.

Laurinaitis (6-3, 244., Hamel, Mn.), who had already had a highly decorated collegiate career, was a Lott finalist last year. He has won the Butkus and Nagurski awards in previous seasons. Laurinaitis is a two-time Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year and a two-time Ohio State captain. He?s been an academic All-American and on the Dean?s List each of his four years. He led the Buckeyes in tackles again this season with 121.


Says Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel, ?He?s a talented yet humble young man who brings enormous credit to the game of college football. He represents Ohio State with poise and class.?


The winner will be announced at a black-tie banquet at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, Ca. Dec. 14.

Laurinaitis is a great player but to act like he is that far ahead of the competition or that a player like Spikes, regardless of whether or not he is consistently better, did not have an arguably superior season is ludicrous. Overall their seasons are relatively similar but Spikes has made more big plays, which in my mind would put him over the top.

Laurinaitis is a great player but to act like he is that far ahead of the competition or that a player like Spikes, regardless of whether or not he is consistently better, did not have an arguably superior season is ludicrous. One aggressive post merits another. Laurinaitis has been consistently excellent but Spikes has surpassed him on several occasions this season. I like to think my fellow fans can be reasonable and rational on most occasions but seeing people say things like that upsets me because it confirms the negative beliefs that other fans have about Ohio State fans.

Difference is, his post was not directed toward you. On the other hand, your aggressive post was directed at him. See the difference?

I agree that it should be Spikes, but the voters love to spread around the awards to different players.

Viking i am sorry if i offended you i do believe that spikes is a great lb, but i was in no way blasting him or making any less of what he has done, and i think i said that, if i did not then again i apologize but to call me ridiculous and then in a following post state that i am the type of fan that perpetuates what the country thinks of ohio state fans seems hypocritical, i am not here to argue i just wanted to make a hyperbole about the player that i have great admiration for and again i do apologize if i offended you or anyone else with my comments.:osu:

Who is Spikes? None of the four finalists are named Spikes...the other three are Aaron Curry of Wake Forest, Brian Orakpo of Texas, and Myron Rolle of Florida State.

They're talking about Brandon Spikes of Florida, hopefully in reference to the Butkus Award. 'Cause like you said, he's not a candidate for the Lott Trophy.

Linebacker James Laurinaitis and cornerback Malcolm Jenkins were named first-team All-Americans on the American Football Coaches Association team today, an honor that allowed Laurinaitis to make OSU history.
The AFCA is the first of the five universally recognized All-American teams to announce its honorees. The Sporting News, Associated Press, Walter Camp and Football Writers have yet to announce their teams.
With his placement on the team, Laurinaitis became the eighth three-time first-team All-American in Ohio State history, joining Chic Harley (1916-1919), Wes Fesler (1928-1930), Lew Hinchman (1930-1932), Merle Wendt (1934-1936), Archie Griffin (1973-1975), Tom Skladany (1974-1976) and Mike Doss (2000-2002).
According to NCAA standards, Laurinaitis has the chance to become just the third three-time consensus All-American in OSU history, joining Harley and Fesler.
