LB Coach James Laurinaitis (2x B1G DPOY, 2006 Nagurski, 2007 Butkus, 2008 Lott, 3x All-American, OSU HOF)

Congrats to Curry. I'm not sure I think he's better than James, but James doesn't really need any more hardware to prove his worth. Just for reference,

Curry
12 games, 101 tackles, 63 solo, 15 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 1 INT, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery

Maualuga
11 games, 73 tackles, 45 solo, 2.5 TFL, 0 sacks, 2 INT, 0 forced fumbles, 0 fumble recoveries

Laurinaitis
12 games, 121 tackles, 46 solo, 5.5 TFL, 4 sacks, 2 INT, 1 forced fumble, 0 fumble recoveries

Not sure Maualuga deserved to finish above James, but it's irrelevant.

Ohio State football: How is Laurinaitis like Herschel?

by Doug Lesmerises Friday December 12, 2008, 10:30 AM

AP fileFormer Georgia running back Herschel Walker and OSU linebacker James Laurinaitis are part of an exclusive five-man club.
Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis hasn't won any of the three personal awards - the Butkus, the Lombardi or the Bednarik - that he was a finalist for so this season. He has one award, the Lott, remaining on Sunday.
Laurinaitis is a better player than he was when he won a national award (Nagurski) as a sophomore and when he won as a junior (Butkus), but I think he isn't faring as well because Ohio State is not in the national title game this year and because voters have tired of him a bit.
But let's look at this. Laurinaitis has made both major All-American teams - the American Football Coaches of America and the Walter Camp - that have been named so far. And what he's doing there is historic.
Already, he's only the eighth Ohio State player to be a three-time All-American. And he should emerge as only the third to be a consensus three-time All-American.
But check out this info from the Walter Camp folks, the team that was announced on Thursday night.

In the 119 years of the Walter Camp All-American team - we're talking back to the A. Hamilton Wallis days of 1892 - only FIVE players have been three-time, first-team All-Americans.

Am I the only one who thinks JL got robbed in the Bednarik this year? Maualuga did not have a great year. Since when does less than 100 tackles and no sacks get you a major award as a LB? There may have been more deserving LBs, but Maualuga was not one of them. JL admittedly is not on the level as Spielman or Hawk. He has had a few less than stellar games, but when he is on, he is the best LB in the country. I'd accept Spikes, or another LB who's stats overshodowed JL's as a more deserving candidate, but, IMO, Maualuga was the beneficiary of overhyped preseason expectations which he did not live up to. RM makes more highlight hits than JL, some of which are out of bounds, but JL is the much more findamentally sound LB. IMO, the negative press surrounding OSU cost JL a deserved award, but since he collected in previous years, it's not so bad.

In my opinion what did it was the head to head match up of Laurinaitis and Mauluga. Mauluga had an int return for a touchdown. If you watched the ceremonies you would of seen it 3 or 4 or even 5 times *vomit. I swear each time I had the same look of surprise that I did the moment it happened on Sept. 13th. "No, dont thro......" Each time my girlfriend looked at me as if I farted. aka exe. like wtf is wrong with you.

It was an overall awkward award ceremony for me. None the less Congratz to Mauluga and to the rest of the winners, but specifically congratz to Laurinaitis and Jenkin considering they are bad asses about to make bank.

I agree. Stats are not everything, but just watching Maulaluga and looking at some of his stats, he just did not have even a good year. If that is any other player's stats they would not even been thought of to win the award. JL's stats are eye poping either, but he had over 120 tackles and 4 sacks along with multiple INTs.

Fox Sports: Laurinaitis Wins Lott Trophy

Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis received the Lott Trophy on Sunday night at the Pacific Club.

The award, named for Hall of Fame defensive back Ronnie Lott, recognizes on-field performance and personal character among defensive players.

Laurinaitis is a two-time Big Ten defensive player of the year who led the Buckeyes in tackles with 121. The All-American was a Lott finalist last year.

The 6-foot-3, 244-pound senior edged Aaron Curry of Wake Forest, Brian Orakpo of Texas and Myron Rolle of Florida State for the award.
Lott presented the award to Laurinaitis.

Congratulations, James! What a collegiate career! 4 Big Ten Championships, 4 Wins over UM, 3 Time First Team All-American, 3 Major Awards, 4 BCS bowls (including two NC games), 3 seasons as OSU's leading tackler. Add to that, he's a great kid who exemplifies what Ohio State athletics are all about. JL's been saddled with the overrated tag for much of his time at OSU, but in a few years, he will be remembered as one of the best to ever wear the Scarlet and Gray. Seems like just yesterday I was shocked to see him go in the Michigan game when Bobby C. went down. Good luck in life, and in your football career.

As I've said before, I believe this makes James the first player to ever receive a national award in 3 different seasons.

Congrats to James on a very special accomplishment.
