They're talking about Brandon Spikes of Florida, hopefully in reference to the Butkus Award. 'Cause like you said, he's not a candidate for the Lott Trophy.

Brandon Spikes is a star linebacker for Florida. :osu:

You mean the Brandon Spikes who isn't even on NCAA's list of top tacklers?

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

2008:One of only three linebackers in the nation with two interception returns for
touchdowns this season...Two interceptions returned for a touchdown in a season
tied the school record...Has three interceptions this season against top-25 teams,
which is tied for second among all players nationally and is the most by any linebacker

top-25 teams were Tulsa?s Michael LeDet (2004) and Michigan State?s T.J. Turner (1999)
with four each...His two interceptions against LSU makes him one of only 10 linebackers
in the country to have two interceptions in a game this year...Starter at middle linebacker
who leads the team with 70 tackles on the season, including 8.0 for a loss of 29 yards...
Intercepted a pass in the first quarter against South Carolina and returned it 12 yards for
his second touchdown of the year...Led the Gators with seven tackles against Vanderbilt,

his performance against LSU, where he had his first career interception in the first quarter...
On the first play of the fourth quarter, he added his second interception, which he returned
52-yards for the first touchdown of his career, at any level...Had a streak of 11 consecutive
games with a tackle for loss end against LSU...Against Ole Miss, had eight tackles in the first
half for the second game in a row on his way to a season-high 13 tackles...Led the team
with 10 tackles in the win over Tennessee, including one tackle for loss...Made his season
debut against Miami and recorded a game-high 11 tackles, including 1.5 for a loss of three
yards...Missed the first game of the season due to a foot injury.

* Stats are not updated for FSU. He has four ints against top 25 teams.

Anything he's not a finalist in, I hope James gets it.

Good to see that Brandon Spikes is in the same league as the great Michael LeDet....

Best of luck to James ... already the Buckeyes' eighth three-time All American, and should bring home some more hardware to Columbus.

Spikes added an INT in the FSU game, bringing him to 4 interceptions against top 25 opponents (2 against LSU, 1 against S. Carolina, 1 against FSU). Not bad for a LB, and a similar skill that Laurinaitis has.

No doubt. It's amazing that James is our first 3-timer at the linebacker spot, considering the players who have come through our program.

And if he does get an award this year, I'm pretty sure he'll be the first player to win a major national college football award in 3 different seasons. It's time for me to do that annual thread bump.

That's quite an impressive list at the top. Derrick Richardson and Frantz Joseph should take home all the hardware this year.

You would expect that someone that's getting serious consideration as the best LB in college football would be in the top 97 in tackles. But, I guess that's just me...

I think you have to consider individual statistics in the broader scope in order to be fair though. A bunch of us, you may have been included, refuted the argument from Sniper last season about Shawn Crable being in the same elite group of LBs as James Laurinaitis b/c their stats to that point in the season were similar. Well Michigan's defense and defensive starters were on the field a hell of a lot more. Crable wasn't close to James as a player. Take a look at the list that you linked - there are a few great players, but the vast majority are good tacklers on bad defenses.

Anyone who watches Spikes play would hard pressed to disagree that he is a great player. He had 80 tackles in 11 games, with good numbers for interceptions and tackles for loss. Florida was #3 in scoring offense this season, #4 in scoring defense, and #1 in turnover margin. With the exception of the loss to Ole Miss, they blew everyone out. Spikes made 13 tackles in the only Florida game that was close - in other words there is a inverse correlation with Spikes' production in tackles and the scoring margin for Florida. The combination of Florida's team stats tells me that their starters on defense probably saw less snaps (both due to the efficiency of the starters while in the game (e.g. 3 & outs) and the reserves getting in the game relatively early) than anyone else in the country, giving Spikes less opportunities than other players around the country.

Ray Maualuga has 68 tackles on the year in 10 games. I would argue that similar constraints on individual statistics apply to him (USC is #1 in both scoring and overall defense, and #13 in scoring offense). He's great though, no doubt about it.

Tackles definately aren't a very good statistic to compare players with.
Hell about the only statistical category Posluzny beat Hawk in 2005 was tackles (by like 20 at most I'm thinking), and Hawk demolished him in every other category... yet, Suckslozny walked away with the Butkus that year thanks to the Pennsylvania Athletic Club.

For me, tackles should be looked at, but definitely not weighted so severely like they were for Suckslozny, because I want to see the best linebacker in the nation making plays other than being able to spy a running QB the whole game and rack up 12 or so tackles in a game. I want the best linebacker to force fumbles, intercept passes, make sacks, and get some fucking tackles for losses, all of which Hawk was great at, and Suckslozny was only mediocre at. Shit, Suckslozny didn't even record a turnover in 2005, if my memory serves me correct.

Have award ceremony, will travel: OSU's Laurinaitis shrugs off postseason honor circuit

Marvin Fong/PDOSU All-American LB James Laurinaitis.
COLUMBUS -- Scouting report on James Laurinaitis: Takes proper angle to the ballcarrier, plays the pass well, looks good in a tuxedo. Through his four-year career at Ohio State, the Buckeyes' middle linebacker has worn black tie nearly as much as a scarlet jersey. Need a guy with a winning smile and a thick neck to pose for a picture? Call on No. 33.
Laurinaitis has been up for a stunning 11 major individual awards in his career, winning the Nagurski Trophy as a sophomore and the Butkus Award as a junior, with three more possibilities still on the table this season.
Laurinaitis flew to Houston on Tuesday (Lombardi Award), heads to Orlando on Thursday morning (Bednarik Award), then back to Columbus on Friday to squeeze in a Saturday morning practice before heading to California that night (Lott Trophy).
That award travel drove OSU linebacker A.J. Hawk nuts his senior year, but Laurinaitis knows it's part of his schedule.

Ohio State senior linebacker James Laurinaitis has been up for 11 major individual awards during his career. That's a lot of ceremonies. This week, he's hitting Houston, Orlando and Newport Beach, Calif. Here's the breakdown of No. 33's awards life as a Buckeye, not counting his All-American honors and two awards as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

"I wish I was with my team. I wish I didn't miss any practice," Laurinaitis said. "But it's fun to see what the other guys around the country are doing. It's cool to be in the presence of guys who are making plays every weekend."
