Often a last resort when the regular stuff stops working. I feel really bad for their kids...I hope they get all the support they need to make it through. Chris is the consummate family man, but it will be a long road, unfortunately

So true it seems. My prayers go out the the entire Spielman family. Stay strong!

Man, that is terrible. I watched my wife's aunt suffer though the very same thing. Not much else I can add to the thread, except that I am going to give my wife and daughter an extra kiss tonight before going to bed. I feel for their family, and every family that is enduring sickness. It kind of puts everything in to perspective.

Damn, prayers for the Spielman family. My grandma died a few years ago from cancer and after the cancer came back a second time she didn't want to go through chemo again. My mom and/or my grandma's sister(former nurse) were at her house everyday taking care of her for the last few months of her life. Having to watch someone you love slowly die from cancer is one of the worst things to go through. My grandpa(dad's side of the family) also died a few months later from cancer.

In the holy books many religions, we are told that the point of suffering is spiritual growth that prepares us for the next world. I am so very sorry that the Spielman family, which by all descriptions is a wonderful family filled with caring people and Buckeye spirit, should suffer through this.

The entire Spielman family should be in our thoughts and prayers. God bless.

Best of the rest
Chris Spielman

As a Buckeye: Three-time All-Big Ten player (1984 to '87) and two-time All-American whose total of 283 career solo tackles stands as a school record. The 1987 Lombardi Award winner was elected to the college Hall of Fame this year.

As a pro: A tackling machine in a 10-year career with Detroit (eight seasons) and Buffalo (two), Spielman led his team in tackles each of his first nine seasons and finished his career with 1,181 solo stops. He made four Pro Bowls with the Lions - 1989-91 and '94.

The skinny: Spielman dropped to the second round of the 1988 draft and made a lot of NFL teams pay for passing him over. He signed with the Browns in 1999 but retired after suffering a neck injury in preseason. These days, he's a media darling in local radio and on ESPN and a breast-cancer warrior along with his wife, Stefanie. These days, he's well-known in media circles in local radio and on ESPN, and is a breast-cancer warrior along with his wife, Stefanie.

SPIELMAN'S ACT OF

KINDNESS: Former Ohio State linebacker Chris Spielman gave four tickets to today's game to the family of Ed Thomas, the Iowa high school football coach who was shot and killed, allegedly by a former player, last summer at Aplington-Parkersburg High School in Parkersburg, Iowa.

Spielman met Aaron and Todd Thomas, sons of Ed Thomas, when he was part of ESPN's coverage of Aplington-Parkersburg's season opener. Todd Thomas told the Des Moines Register that Spielman gave him his phone number and said too keep in touch.

When he called Spielman and asked if he had any connections that would help him buy tickets for today's game, Spielman mailed him four tickets.
