LB Brian Rolle (Official Thread)

Plugging In The Pieces: LB Rolle
By Bo Wulf

Comments:
The Eagles had instant success with a late-round pick from Ohio State last year in Kurt Coleman. Can the same thing happen this year with linebacker Brian Rolle?

College Career: A two-year starter at middle linebacker and captain during his senior year, Rolle was one of the leaders of a Buckeye defense that led the Big Ten in consecutive seasons. Rolle saved his best for last when, as a senior, he posted 76 tackles, including 11.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks and two interceptions en route to being honored as a first-team All-Big Ten performer.

Strengths: Rolle is a high-effort, intelligent player who, rest assured, won?t be phased by the big moment after his career at Ohio State. As a middle linebacker, Rolle excelled at diagnosing plays early, rallying to the ball and being a very sound tackler. At the next level, Rolle?s quickness and eye for the game will be his calling cards, especially because of his lack of ideal size.

What He?ll Need To Prove: Most scouting reports on Rolle will tell you that the former Buckeye has all the measurables for the next level - except for height. But there have been plenty of undersized players in the league to excel. For his part, Rolle will just need to show that he can withstand the speed and physicality of the game and, in time, he?ll get an opportunity to prove himself.

How He Fits In: On defense, Rolle will likely be moved off of middle linebacker and will be employed as a weakside linebacker and a sub-package player on passing downs. But his immediate impact will come on special teams, where Rolle was a standout in his first two seasons at Ohio State. With his on-field mindset, Rolle has a chance to be a special teams demon.

Actually, expecting the worst is literally part of the definition of pessimism.

Not really. I look at it like I look at losing games. I don't expect it to happen, but I will deal with it if it does.
Well you've got your head in the sand then. I'm not pessimistic at all as I'm not "expecting the worst", I'm expecting what sounds reasonable...which is a pretty stiff set of sanctions.

Since nobody here has a good understanding of how the NCAA will treat our specific fact pattern, it's unreasonable to throw out stuff like "your head is in the sand."

I happen to agree that the sanctions are likely to be stiff, but I don't know much either. Honestly, I was a bit surprised at how stiff Boise and USC penalties were.

I'd say it's more unreasonable for anyone to expect otherwise.

Rolle graduates

Whether Joe Bauserman, the backup to Pryor the past two seasons, will be the starting quarterback for the season opener remains to be seen, but he now can boast of being an alumnus. The fifth-year senior was one of 15 current or former OSU football players to take part in graduation ceremonies yesterday.
Joining him were three of OSU's departed captains from last season: Cameron Heyward, Brian Rolle and Dane Sanzenbacher.
"There was a lot of hard work involved, and now there is a feeling of gratitude because this is the reason I came to college, and to be the first in my immediate family (to gain a degree) is truly an honor," said Heyward, who was a first-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in April. "I have something to fall back on. It feels like a sense of entitlement to graduate from college."

85 scholarship players, the majority of whom were Freshman, RS Freshman, Soph., and Juniors in 2010. The overall academic improvement in GPA and graduation rates in the latter years of the Tressel era has been fairly well reported on, at least locally.

Don't mean to be a downer, but aren't there around 100 players on the team?

Here's the info that should make nothing a downer about this year's graduation numbers. Spring commencement isn't the only time that football players get their degrees.

Official.site

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 2011 commencement ceremonies Sunday at The Ohio State University included diplomas for 15 Ohio State Buckeye football players, 11 who were members of the 2010 Big Ten Conference and Sugar Bowl championship team. Including 15 student-athletes who had previously graduated in the past year, 26 individuals off the 2010 team have now received their degrees.

Brian has to be one of the classiest guys that I have met.

2 Spring Games ago(2010,prior to his senior season), he was coming out of the tunnel after the game, my son(5 years old) asked for his autograph, Brian said he would be back out and would sign his hat. About 5-10 minutes later he came out and was being rushed by the staff to get on the bus to get to the picnic. He told them to wait. He said he promised he would sign my son's hat and had to do that before he could get on the bus.

He became my son's favorite player, to the point that every time I had the game on he asked where Brian was and every time he played NCAA 2011 he wanted to control "3-6 Brian Rolle". He even chose a #36 jersey over a #2 jersey(which I am thoroughly glad of now).

We went to the Spring Game again this year and I told him that I heard Brian would be there. We made our way after the game to the players area and waited. Brian came up, remembered my son, and I proceeded to explain to him that he was "Josiah's" favorite player. Unfortunatley my son was soooo bashful that he started to cry a bit and Brian tried to cheer him up. it really showed how great of a guy he is.

I sent him a facebook message after I had gotten home. I told him how even though my son was bashful that he talked about meeting him the rest of the day. Brian promptly messaged back that he was glad to meet him and happy that he had made a fan.

A little while later the NFL draft started. We had it on in the background and Josiah kept asking if Brian had been drafted. When we saw him get picked by Philly my son said to me "Well I guess I like the Eagles now."

Good luck to Brian going forward and congrats on finishing things the right way. Go Bucks!
