LB Brian Rolle (Official Thread)

Currently my favorite Buckeye. I like his speed and his motor, always looking to make a play and stay active, and that's what I like most in a defensive player, especially a LB. Also reminds me a lot of Freeman in some ways in that he may never get the hype or credit his performances deserve.

A lot of chatter at the beginning of the year about whether Rolle could fill the position he was asked to play....all I can say is that I'm glad Rolle was on the field this year - man's a playmaker.

Noel Devine, Brian Rolle won't leave college football yet

Craig Handel ? [email protected] ? January 14, 2010

Noel Devine and Brian Rolle found college life to be just too good to leave.

Devine, a North Fort Myers High graduate, and Rolle, a former Immokalee High star, said Thursday they?ll return to school at West Virginia and Ohio State, respectively.

Both players had looked at bypassing their junior seasons to enter the NFL Draft; and it appeared they wouldn?t be drafted in the first two rounds.

Even if they had been projected to by Round 2, it?s not certain they would?ve left.

?I think if I would?ve been in the top 50 picks, I would?ve considered it,? Rolle said. ?But being I wasn?t, I?m staying. I?m not going anywhere.?
Former Immokalee High coach John Weber said he and Rolle talked before the Rose Bowl and thought it would be best for him to stay.

?I was recommending that if he wasn?t going to go in the top-two rounds, that he?d be better of staying in school,? Weber said. ?He?s a pretty intelligent and level-headed young man. He understands the fact that he?d be better off staying in school.?

From the first game of the season when he preserved the Buckeyes? win over Navy with an interception when the Midshipmen went for two points, Rolle had a fine season.

He ranked second on the team with 95 tackles, seven for losses, while helping the Buckeyes (11-2) win the Rose Bowl over Oregon.

?Nobody gave us a chance to win, 77 percent of the country didn?t think we?d win,? Rolle said. ?But we got better every day and proved people wrong.

So now, Rolle, a sociology major, will join eight other juniors who considered leaving but will return. Ohio State figures to be ranked in the top five in the preseason and one of its early games will be at home against Miami.
But there are other reasons Rolle wants to stay.

?The relationships you build with coaches and players is great,? he said. ?And I have seven more classes to go. There?s no point in leaving at this point and trying to play in the NFL.?

a 'first day' pick now means 1st two rounders. I think that he'd be a mid-round guy who would need a tremendous season & workouts to sneak into the 2nd.

Rolle's proved them wrong before, though

Actually wouldn't it just be a first rounder? I thought they were going to move the first round to prime time then two thru X on a saturday then Y thru 7 on the sunday.

say that rolle has a great year in 2010, 1st team all big ten and possibly all american, would he be a first day draft pick? or would the pro scouts see his size and pass on him?

All big ten maybe. AA? Very, very doubtful as much as I love Rolle.

Would scouts pass on him because of his size? At MLB - yes. At OLB, I think he would grade just fine.

He's gonna have a real hard time staying on an NFL roster given his size. I saw my Cardinals draft Buster Davis, the former FSU MLB, who was a total stud in college. They cut him during his first training camp. And he was a third round pick.

Hopefully, he has an incredible year and somebody takes him in the later rounds. He's a great kid, and his ST ability may keep him on a roster and give him a shot down the road.

Sooner or later the NFL is going to have to throw height out the window. Just a few names to think about, London Fletcher, Zack Thomas, Dwight Freeney, and Elvis Dumervil. All of those guy are too short to play LB or DE in the NFL acording to "scouts." They need to put the tape on and see who is making plays and always around the ball. Rolle is ALWAYS around the ball.

I don't see how he could possibly go in the later rounds if he has an incredible year. I think he's a probable 4th or 5th rounder but an incredible year would bump him up another round or two.

LB Brian Rolle: No. 36 (5-10, 220)
An undersized backer who plays with a real chip on his shoulder and mean streak inside. Showcases good toughness to his game, loves to attack downhill, generates a burst into contact and tackles with consistent leverage. Lacks ideal power because of his size and will fail to wrap up at times, but does display some violence as a striker. Exhibits above- average range when asked to run sideline-to-sideline, works hard in pursuit and can consistently make plays away from his frame. Does a nice job keeping himself clean, as he isn?t a guy who can take on blocks inside. Is easily sealed from the play once an opposing lineman gets his hands on him, but has a good feel inside with the body control to spin off/run around blocks and quickly close on the football.

Exhibits slightly above-average instincts in coverage with the balance and fluidity in his drop to quickly make his way down the field and redirect out of his breaks. Loves to be really physical off the line, consistently delivering a good jolt on contact and disrupting the timing of receivers into their routes. Has the range to run down the seam and can be difficult to separate from down the field in man coverage.

Impression: A nasty little linebacker who is a bit limited because of his size, but is the ideal kind of late round, cover two type pick who can end up making and eventually contributing to an NFL roster.
