INSIDE OHIO STATE
Carpenter sits out, but still takes side

Plain Dealer Reporter
Tempe, Ariz.- Bobby Carpenter stepped onto the field at Sun Devil Stadium in full uniform Monday, running through all the pregame drills with the rest of the linebackers, looking very much like a player ready to take on Notre Dame.
It didn't happen.
"I knew I probably wouldn't be able to go," Carpenter said. "I just wanted to come out one last time."
So Carpenter stalked the sidelines without a helmet, standing out with his flowing blonde hair, offering advice to any teammate who would take it. The defense managed without him in a 34-20 win.
"I was ready if they needed me," Carpenter said, "but the defense came out and played amazing."
The Buckeyes used freshman linebacker James Laurinaitis and freshman defensive end Lawrence Wilson in his place while playing a lot of nickel defense against the Notre Dame passing attack.
"Everybody stepped up," defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said. "What a great group of guys.

Carpenter stalks sideline

Linebacker Bobby Carpenter knew he wasn’t going to play because of a broken leg suffered in the Michigan game, but he still kept himself busy.
"I was a defensive assistant coach, cheerleader, water boy . . . anything I could do to help," Carpenter said. "It’s tough not being on the field, but I did everything I could to be a part of it."

Carpenter’s leg is healing, but it’s not 100 percent.

"It made it a lot easier to watch when the team is winning and everybody is playing well," he said. "I would have rather played, of course, but it was really fun to watch.

"I have no regrets. I leave Ohio State with a lot of wins and lot of friends."
Freshman James Laurinaitis started in Carpenter’s spot, a role he didn’t take lightly.
"But when you have guys like A.J. Hawk and Anthony Schlegel next to you, you don’t have to worry about screwing up, because they’ll cover for you," Laurinaitis said.

As I mentioned in the game thread, Carp is the heart and soul of this defense...His presence on the sideline was invaluable IMO...Good luck Carp. Can't wait to see you on the field again on Sundays...

This thread pretty much died out after the Fiesta bowl... has anyone heard any updates on how Bobby is coming along with his rehab and his readiness for the combines? Furthermore, does anyone know his projected draft status right now?

Mel Kiper Jr. just projected Carp to go to the Pats with the 22nd overall pick.

That would be somethin, another first round buckeye. Would be the 2nd of our linebacking corps.

Dang! The Browns are going to miss out on both Hawk and Carp (and Greenway) I would like to see them take Carp with the 12th pick, but they really need D-line also, and they will probably take Rod Wright from TX.
I was hoping maybe they could steal Carp in the 2nd round.

I think Carp would be the perfect linebacker for the 3-4 that the Pats run. I was listening to ESPN this morning and they said youth on defense was a need for the Pats and 3-4 linebackers were hard to find. I though, cha-ching, take Bobby.
