TEMPE, Ariz . | Ohio State's Bobby Carpenter was hounded by strangers offering miracle cures after breaking his lower leg against Michigan. And while he viewed them as quacks, his parents weren't so skeptical.
"One holistic healer called my dad, and he talked to her for an hour," Carpenter said. "It was definitely very interesting."
Alas, there were no quick remedies for the senior linebacker's fractured fibula, which is why he's questionable for the Fiesta Bowl on Monday.
OSU coach Jim Tressel said Carpenter would need to at least suit up in a helmet and shoulder pads for drills before jumping into action against the Irish. And as of Friday morning, the third-team All-American had only worked out on the sidelines.
"It's definitely getting better," he said of the injury. "Running straight ahead doesn't give me any problems, but I'm not sure how it will do if I twist my hips and do the things you have to do in a game."
Carpenter won't join the fray unless he believes he can be an asset.
"I've got to look at it realistically and separate my emotions from everything," he said. "If I can't help the team be successful, I shouldn't be out there. I want to play, but I can't be selfish about it.
"When I came here, the odds of playing were probably 50-50, maybe lower.
I'd say they're about the same."
