ZANESVILLE -- If nothing else, Andrew Sweat showed he was difficult to deter.

He patiently bided his time as an Ohio State linebacker, where he waited behind the likes of James Laurinaitis, Marcus Freeman and Ross Homan.

He started two years at strong side linebacker, but his career was one filled with obstacles.

There was the head coaching change and new position coach, and injuries that cost him a chance to play against rival Michigan.

But now he's healthy and looking forward to the next step in his football career.

"I'm finally 100 percent," Sweat said while signing autographs Monday evening at Cardboard Heroes in Colony Square Mall. "I was pretty much hurt the whole year. At camp I was hurt, the first four games I was hurt. ... I was only healthy for like two games. I was pretty much only playing on one leg with my knee."

That, of course, limited his mobility and productivity. He still managed to rank second on the team with 72 tackles (35 solo) while forcing a fumble and intercepting a pass.

Now he's trying to make his statement for NFL scouts, who surely took notice of his 6-1, 238-pound frame and 4.58-second 40-yard dash at OSU's pro day this past weekend.

NFL part of Sweat's strategy
By F. Dale Lolley, Staff writer [email protected]

Four years ago, Trinity High School graduate Andrew Sweat arrived on the Ohio State campus with a plan.

He wanted to play football, get his degree and possibly follow up a strong career with the Buckeyes with one in the NFL.

Sweat completed his football career at Ohio State with a solid senior season, leading the Buckeyes in tackles from his linebacker position with 72 and earning second-team All-Big Ten honors, despite missing two games with a concussion.

Later this spring, he will complete his schooling when the three-time all-academic Big Ten selection will graduate June 1 with a double major in accounting and finance.

As for the third part of his checklist, playing in the NFL, he has taken some positive steps toward making that happen in recent weeks.

The 6-1, 238-pound Sweat had an outstanding performance at the Ohio State pro day last week in front of coaches and scouts from all 32 NFL teams, looking fluid in position drills and being timed between 4.55 and 4.65 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

"It was pretty nerve-wracking. I talked with between 12 and 16 teams," Sweat said. "I spent an hour with the Falcons. A lot of teams had me take personality tests."

The Ohio State workout was particularly important for Sweat, because he suffered a concussion and also had an elbow injury at the end of the season that kept him from being invited to any of the college all-star games or the NFL combine.

Sweat is healthy now and has been working out at D-1 Sports Training in suburban Columbus, Ohio, with some Buckeyes teammates and assorted NFL players, including linebacker Bobby Carpenter and wide receiver Lance Moore.

He'll spend the month before the draft, which will be held April 26 through 28, making individual visits with teams.

Sweat is represented by Avella native Ralph Cindrich, a high school teammate of Sweat's father Gary. Sweat said he has already scheduled a number of visits, including another with the Falcons.

The Steelers, Ravens and Bengals are among those who have shown interest.

Sweat will put off law school if NFL calls
By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch Saturday April 28, 2012

Andrew Sweat can laugh about the one law-school rejection he got among the five acceptances.

For one thing, the law school the former Ohio State linebacker didn?t get into is one of the best in the country. More important, Sweat would prefer to put off law school for a few years.

That?s a change from only a few months ago.

?I wasn?t sure I was going to pursue the NFL,? Sweat said. ?I was going to go to law school. It?s kinda crazy. I came pretty close to it.?

He figured his football career might be over after a senior season marred by a concussion and then a dislocated elbow. But a clean bill of health and strong workouts have given Sweat optimism about his chances for a pro career. He said his agent, Ralph Cindrich, told him at the start of the draft evaluation process that he?d have to make an NFL team as a free agent.

?But, now, he said he?d be very surprised if I wasn?t drafted,? Sweat said. ?There?s been a ton of interest.?

So the law-school rejection doesn?t sting so much, considering he was accepted by Pittsburgh, Duquesne, West Virginia, Florida and the University of Miami.

The one that said no? From the yes-this-is-really-true department, it came from Ohio State, despite a recommendation from President E. Gordon Gee and a 3.4 grade-point average as a marketing major, while balancing what some might consider a challenging athletic gig on the side.

?Ohio State Law School is a very hard law school to get into,? Sweat said. ?I wasn?t upset at all over it.?

Unfortunately, he got the rejection before the other schools said yes.

?I was like, ?Oh crap, it?s going to be a long day,?  ? Sweat said with a chuckle.

Former Ohio State linebacker Andrew Sweat stopped being a Pittsburgh Steelers fan shortly after the NFL Draft ended Saturday. The native of western Pennsylvania signed with the Browns, as did former Ohio State right tackle J.B. Shugarts.

"They gave me an opportunity," Sweat told The Plain Dealer. "They're my new favorite team."

Sweat, who can play any linebacker position, has been accepted to several law schools but is taking another shot at football, hoping to show the kind of player he is after his senior season was sidetracked by a concussion and an elbow injury.

"I really think that I haven't shown that," Sweat said. "I was hurt my whole senior year. We'll see. I'll let my actions speak for themselves and go out and play."

Sweat acts quickly, gets deal with Browns
By F. Dale Lolley Observer-Reporter

Andrew Sweat heard from 10 teams during the course of the NFL draft, which concluded Saturday.

But the former Trinity High School and Ohio State University star went unselected in the seven-round draft. It did not, however, take the inside linebacker long to hook up with an NFL team.

After mulling offers from several teams, Sweat (6-1, 232) agreed to sign a free-agent deal with the Cleveland Browns.

"Everything happened so fast," Sweat said. "It just seemed like that was the best opportunity for me. They play a 4-3 defense, and it seemed like I was really wanted."

It also doesn't hurt that Cleveland is close to Columbus. Ohio State's school year doesn't conclude until the end of May, and Sweat will report to Cleveland May 10 for rookie orientation.

"It's close to Columbus; it's close to home," Sweat said. "I'm still in school, but, hopefully, I'll be able to talk to my professors, talk to the Browns and work out something so that I won't have to miss classes and still do what I need to do."

Thirty-six of the 37 players expected to participate in the minicamp today took part in practice. Only Ohio State linebacker Andrew Sweat was missing.
Browns coach Pat Shurmur said Sweat has decided not to pursue a career in the NFL. Sweat was one of the 15 undrafted free agents whom the Browns signed.
