Linebacker Andrew Sweat wraps up Michigan State running back Edwin Baker.

As might be expected considering his last name, Andrew Sweat loves to practice his game.

Football? Well, practice with the Ohio State defense is mandatory, since he is senior starting linebacker. But right here we?re talking about practicing his golf game, hitting countless balls at the driving range, becoming as one with his lefthanded swing.

?He really does enjoy it,? his father Gary Sweat said.

Then he laughed.

?There have been times in the past when he?s had dates when he?s taken them to the driving range,? Gary Sweat said. ?And not just for a short time. He?ll get two of the largest buckets they have and hit every ball.?

Andrew Sweat smiled when relayed that anecdote, but he didn?t deny it.

?Yeah, the girls weren?t too happy about it,? he said. ?But I guess that?s just part of it. If they weren?t going to go with me to hit golf balls, they didn?t cut it.

?But afterwards, of course, I?d take them out to eat or to a movie or something. You know, give and take.?

Great article. I've had the chance to really get to know Gary and, to a lesser extent, Andrew over the past 5 years and have been extremely impressed by both of them over that time. This article couldn't have summed them up better. It's a shame that Andrew doesn't have that redshirt year of availability left like Sabino.

I know Andrew pretty well and last year he seemed pretty happy that he didn't redshirt, and that Bino did instead. Not sure what he thinks about it now as I haven't directly asked him but he's very positive and has a great outlook on everything. Real Good Guy, representing Washington PA, haha...

This was a nice nod to Sweat. The Buckeyes have replaced Sweat with the quicker, younger, fresher Ryan Shazier in the fourth quarter of some recent games, particularly to have Shazier spy on the quarterback. Ohio State did some of that again Saturday. But when it came down to crunch time, head coach Luke Fickell told linebackers coach Mike Vrabel he wanted his top guys in there. So on the last play of the game, as Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson got ready to try a throw into the endzone, it was Sweat who attacked the play and hit Wilson's arm as he threw, wiping out the chance of a Hail Mary.

"I want Andrew in there," Fickell said. "And he made a heck of a play."

It was great to see the D step up last night, save the lapse that almost cost the Bucks the game :tongue2: The LB's, at least the starters, are more built for this type of game, more smash mouth, less spread. Way to finish it off young man.

Ohio State football: Sweat awaits OK to play again
Senior linebacker doesn?t want to miss last shot at Michigan
By Bill Rabinowitz

Andrew Sweat is smart enough to know it?s good that the decision isn?t his to make.

If it were, it would be an easy one. Despite a concussion that knocked him out of the Purdue game two weeks ago and kept him out against Penn State, Sweat desperately wants to play on Saturday against Michigan.

?I?ll do everything I can possibly do to get back on the field,? Sweat said on Monday. ?Being smart about it, that?s where the doctors come into play. Obviously, I would play right now and would have played last week.?

The Buckeyes can certainly use him. Sweat?s replacement at linebacker, freshman Ryan Shazier, had an impressive starting debut against the Nittany Lions. Shazier had 15 tackles and is a budding star.

But on an inexperienced, mistake-prone defense, Sweat is a needed steadying influence. The senior leads the Buckeyes with 68 tackles.

?Andrew?s an amazing player for us, a playmaker,? defensive lineman John Simon said. ?He?s (also) a great leader ? on the field, directing traffic, getting the play called in, setting the front. He does a lot that goes unnoticed. The players really appreciate that.?

Hope this happens. The combo of Sweat, Shazier, and Sabino would be great. Add Grant and Klein with more experience and with Urban's discipline, I see this line-backing crew as a formidable force.

:)

This would have been the starting LB corp for Michigan had Andrew not dislocated his elbow in the last 15 minutes of practice on Wednesday of Michigan week after having been cleared to play due to the concussion.

FYI, as I was told, the medical hardship was not even being considered until it was requested by Meyer.
