LB A.J. Hawk (2x All-American, Lombardi Trophy, National Champion, Super Bowl Champion)

they probably just wanted to get married in gb. instead of asking people to travel to gb for a day just for the wedding, they went this route.
From Deadspin:
(UPDATE: A source closer to this situation than we are -- that is to say, a source who occasionally leaves his/her apartment -- says it's not a slip-past-the-goalie situation. "it's simply to facilitate a better financial situation by allowing Laura to be insured and have the rest of her education paid for by the NFL when AJ signs his contract." OK, that makes sense.)

Although, this situation is much more fun to assume:
Hmm. Doing some math ... August ... September ... October ... March ... that's about, oh, eight months. Hmm.

Hawk opts not to wait on wedding
Dad says former OSU star didn't want to live with Quinn before marriage.

By Doug Harris

Staff Writer

A.J. Hawk and fiancee Laura Quinn had scheduled a blow-out wedding for next spring, but something compelled him to scrap those plans.

His morals.

The former Ohio State and Centerville High School star has moved to Green Bay to begin a career with the Packers and wanted the sister of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn to join him — but not before first tying the knot.

"He didn't want to be living together as boyfriend and girlfriend," said Keith Hawk, the player's father. "He wanted to be living together as man and wife. He's old-school in everything he does, including this."

Hawk and Quinn, who began dating about one year ago, were wed in a civil ceremony Monday in a downtown Green Bay law office with attorney J. Michael Jerry officiating. Only their immediate families knew about the nuptials, and none of them was present.

The couple simply wanted to make their relationship legal and were determined not to spoil a big bash still scheduled for St. Patrick's Day next year in Quinn's hometown of Dublin.

Hawk, who dressed in his customary Under Armour workout gear for the vows, was aghast that a Milwaukee newspaper reported that the two had exchanged rings.

"He wanted to keep this quiet — I mean very quiet — but he didn't realize marriage licenses are a matter of public record," Keith Hawk said, laughing.

As for the media's interest in the player's private life, the elder Hawk said: "That stuff still surprises him. I said, 'Dude, you ought to be used to it by now.' "

The linebacker was the fifth pick of the NFL draft but is still unsigned. Agent Mike McCartney and the Packers are actively negotiating in the hope of reaching a deal before the team begins training camp Thursday.

Re: "Maybe we'll see little A.J. Hawks running around someday."

Maybe we'll see some real big "little Hawks" running around the Shoe dressed in Scarlet and Gray and playing linebacker in about 19 or 20 years.

From 10000 Takes, this would be glorious:
You see, if the Packers finish with the worst record, they'll probably draft...Brady Quinn. So, not only will the networks show Mrs. Quinn-Hawk when A.J. makes a play, they'll show her every time her brother gets flattened behind Green Bay's swiss cheese offensive line.

Too bad the Packers already have a QB apprentice in Aaron Rodgers :( I guess that spoils this plan.

Packers: Hawk near, Roman out

JASON WILDE 608-252-6176

[email protected]

GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers were busy on the eve of training camp, signing two more of their 12 draft picks, moving closer to a deal with first-round pick A.J. Hawk and sending disappointing veteran safety Mark Roman packing Thursday.

Second-round pick Daryn Colledge, who is expected to start at left guard, and fifth-round pick Ingle Martin, who is penciled in as the No. 3 quarterback behind Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, each signed with the team, with Colledge getting a four-year deal that will allow him to work with the No. 1 unit from the first snap of today's 6:30 opening-night practice.

Their signings left only Hawk, the fifth overall pick, and fellow linebacker Abdul Hodge, a third-round choice, unsigned as of Thursday evening.
But the slightly surprising news was the underachieving Roman, a two-year starter who was signed as a free agent from Cincinnati in March 2004, was let go - or at least the timing was surprising.

The team sent a clear message it wanted to upgrade the safety position when it signed Marquand Manuel to a five-year, $10 million deal at the start of free agency. Roman complained publicly about the way he learned of Manuel's signing - he read it on the Internet - and went to general manager Ted Thompson to demand his release.

Thompson refused, and Roman went through both minicamps and the organized team activity practices with the team, often working with the No. 1 unit while Manuel recovered from a lingering groin injury.

Thompson said he and the staff like the young safeties they have behind Manuel and fellow starter Nick Collins - second-year man Marviel Underwood, rookie sixth-round pick Tyrone Culver, undrafted rookie Tra Boger and NFL Europe returnee Atari Bigby - and that made Roman expendable.

Of course, the Packers could've dumped Roman sooner, but Thompson said the timing had nothing to do with Roman's criticism of the team.

"We felt pretty good about some of our young guys during the spring, and quite frankly we think doing it now allows Mark to latch onto another team.

I'm sure he'll sign (elsewhere) in a day or two," Thompson said.

"We had all the spring to look it through and watch the OTAs, and then when our coaches and everybody got back (from vacation last week), we looked at it again. We knew as we were signing our draft choices we had to release some people, and we came to the conclusion that this was the best thing to do right now. We just felt more comfortable with the guys we have."

In 31 starts over two seasons, Roman made 190 tackles and had just two interceptions, 3 sacks and 11 pass break-ups.

Meanwhile, coach Mike McCarthy said he anticipates Hawk to practice tonight because "everything I've been told to this point has been positive."

Hawk's signing should get done in time now that several other high picks have signed.

On Wednesday, the New York Jets came to terms with No. 4 pick D'Brickashaw Ferguson, and on Thursday, the Tennessee Titans and No. 3 overall pick Vince Young agreed on a reported five-year deal that included $25.7 million in guaranteed money.

Asked if he was confident talks between Hawk's agent, Mike McCartney, and Packers vice president of player finance Andrew Brandt would lead to a deal before tonight's practice, Thompson replied, "Well, I don't know if confident is the right word. I know Andrew is working very hard, (Hawk's) agents are working very hard. They're talking every day. I try to stay out of the way. I'll go in there and pat Andrew on the back, or bring him a glass of water, but other than that, I just let him be.

"It's coming along. A deal gets done when it gets done."

Extra points McCarthy said he hasn't spoken to cornerback Charles Woodson, who skipped the second minicamp and all 14 OTA practices.

However, cornerbacks coach Lionel Washington and scout Alonzo Highsmith did visit Woodson in Houston recently. "Obviously Charles and I will visit here in the future," McCarthy said. ... McCarthy said Favre will again be on a "pitch count," as he was in the minicamps and OTAs, giving backup Rodgers more reps. ... McCarthy said he didn't expect any players to miss this morning's 7 o'clock reporting time.

A . J . Hawk’s recent marriage to Laura Quinn, sister of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, received a lot of media attention, particularly in Wisconsin where Hawk is a rookie linebacker with the Green Bay Packers.

But maybe the most interesting part of the story is not that the vows took place at a law firm that included Packers board member Thomas Olejniczak, whose father was team president from 1958-82, but that the former Ohio State star wore his Under Armour workout clothes to the wedding.
The couple had been planning a large wedding for St. Patrick’s Day in Columbus, with a honeymoon in Aruba. Instead, they opted for a private ceremony, which was supposed to be known only to members of their families. Hawk, the fifth overall pick in NFL draft, was still unsigned when training camp opened yesterday, so presumably his "honeymoon" will end the day he signs and has to report.

2 minutes later a deal is reached...

The Green Bay Packers have agreed in principle to a six-year, $37.5 million contract with A.J. Hawk, the fifth overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.
The former Ohio State linebacker hopes to get the language of the contract done by Saturday morning so that he can practice. Terms of his guarantees haven't been finalized. Those will be done Friday night and Saturday morning.
Talks between the Packers and Hawk's agent, Mike McCartney, heated up Thursday afternoon when the Jets completed a similar deal with D'Brickashaw Ferguson, the fourth pick in the draft. The Packers reported to camp Friday.
All of the Packers' draft choices now have contract agreements.

Congrats to AJ
