LB A.J. Hawk (2x All-American, Lombardi Trophy, National Champion, Super Bowl Champion)

I have a feeling that Hawk will be in camp on time, because the Packers will give him a deal he likes right up front...they want him bad.

Re: "Last year’s No. 5 pick, running back Carnell Williams, signed a five-year contract worth $30 million, which included a $13 million signing bonus."

Whenever he does sign he should be "set for life". He is pretty much assured of getting more than $30 million (what last year's # 5 pick received). And it couldn't happen to a better guy!!!

Yeah, then take into account that his fiance is getting bigger and bigger with her media career, which will bring in some shiny pennies.

Hawk doesnt seem like the guy for a hold out, Im sure he will be in camp with the contact under his belt.

Impact player in the making

A.J. HAWK, GREEN BAY

The pre-draft scouting process these days specializes in making mountains of weaknesses out of relative molehills when it comes to early-round prospects, but very few discouraging words were heard regarding Hawk. With size, speed and a track record of production, the Ohio State linebacker is a playmaking machine (a ball Hawk?) who is expected to both start and make his presence felt from the moment the Packers buckle up their chin straps. He can play inside in a 3-4 scheme or outside in a 4-3 and won't ever leave the field due to down and distance. If there's a Shawne Merriman or Lofa Tatupu waiting to be discovered in this year's NFL rookie class, Hawk is the easy pick.

Just saw coverage of a Packers photo shoot on the news... they were trying to get a shot of A.J. making a touchdown, and had him diving repeatedly onto a giant plastic pillow. Looked like he was enjoying himself. Just don't get used to the soft landing!

Even funnier, they decided he should make his touchdowns without a helmet so they could "capture the trademark hair." Let's hope nobody suggests trying it that way for a game. :p

Thompson on Hawk: 'You're going to like him' By Pete Dougherty
[email protected]

Last year's 4-12 season was so painful for the Green Bay Packers and their fans that Ted Thompson twice reminded the team's shareholders of it Wednesday morning.

But in his state-of-the-team speech at Lambeau Field, the Packers' general manager also noted how that poor record led to a chance for a major move to help turn around the team.

Thompson, who in 1½ years on the job has remade the Packers by extensively turning over the roster and coaching staff, revealed that in the weeks leading up to the draft, he told coach Mike McCarthy and top executives Bob Harlan and John Jones he probably wouldn't trade down from the No. 5 overall pick.

He kept his word, determining that Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk was a cornerstone player for a team whose top talent had eroded.

"If we get the kind of player we want to get, we're going to take him," Thompson said he told McCarthy, Harlan and Jones, "and this is the player I felt very, very strongly about in terms of adding him to the Green Bay Packer tradition and the legends here. He's still young, but he's played a lot of football in a big-time place, and I think you're going to like him quite a bit as we go forward."

Much of Thompson's 26-minute speech about his team was the perfunctory optimism for the future and a run through the roster — mostly a list of the players at each position — that the Packers' general managers have been giving at the shareholders meeting for years.

But Thompson also talked about his philosophy and what he considers progress in rebuilding the Packers after what he termed an "excruciating" 4-12 season.

Without mentioning specific personnel moves, Thompson said he considered the offseason fruitful as he tried to rebuild the Packers after their first losing season since 1991.

Sticking to his strategy of building mostly through the draft, Thompson has added Hawk and 11 other draft picks. Most of those rookies are likely to make the final roster.

Unlike last offseason, when he made no free-agent signings of note, Thompson has added two relatively pricey free agents — cornerback Charles Woodson and defensive tackle Ryan Pickett — and another likely starter in safety Marquand Manuel.

"Our whole purpose in the offseason is to try to improve the quality of our depth, to try to get as many impact players as we could, and try to create competition at every position," Thompson said.

"We believe we were able to do that for the most part, (and) we're not done yet. There will be changes in our roster probably prior to training camp, and there will be changes in our roster as we go through training camp."

Another major offseason change came when Thompson fired coach Mike Sherman and replaced him with McCarthy, who was not a prominent name among NFL coaching candidates. McCarthy, 42, impressed Thompson with his previous work with quarterbacks and a gruffly charismatic personality.

"For those of you who don't know Mike," Thompson told shareholders, "he's a tough guy, he's very smart, he's 100 percent football. He's one of those people that has the ability to see the big picture and as well as focus on the details that enable us to get to the promised land."

Thompson also explained to shareholders why his public comments about the Packers — particularly regarding contractual matters, such as cornerback Al Harris' dissatisfaction — are so bland, if made at all.

Thompson said running the football operations in an even-keeled manner "is just my nature, so that's just the way we do it here."

Near the end of his speech to shareholders, Thompson appeared to appeal to fans frustrated by the lack of information from him on such important matters.

"We think it's counterproductive to be involved in any sort of public discourse in that regard," he said. "We really don't talk about it, and we don't spend a lot of time speaking to the public about monies and things like that. We know the importance of the monetary and fiscal landscape of the NFL."

After the meeting, Thompson said he hasn't spoken to Harris recently, but expects the cornerback will report for the start of training camp.

Harris didn't take part in any voluntary practices this offseason to protest his contract, but his agent has said Harris will be at training camp on time and not make the contract an issue during the season.

"I expect all our players to be here if we can get all our rookies (contracts) in," Thompson said.

Former OSU linebacker A.J. Hawk gets hitched

By By Bob McGinn

McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

GREEN BAY, Wis. | Rookie linebacker A.J. Hawk doesn't have a contract from the Green Bay Packers yet, but he does have a new bride.

Hawk and Laura Quinn, sister of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, were married in a civil ceremony Monday afternoon in the Green Bay downtown law offices of Liebmann, Conway, Olejniczak & Jerry. Attorney J. Michael Jerry officiated.

The families had been planning a large wedding for next St. Patrick's Day in Columbus, Ohio. The couple had a honeymoon trip to Aruba planned.

They met at a Christmas party in 2003 and began dating during the summer of 2005.

A source close to the situation said it was neither a family member nor friend who stood up for the couple. The source said a big celebration has been planned for a later date in Columbus.

Hawk and the rest of the team's players are scheduled to report Thursday for the start of training camp and then practice for the first time Friday night. But Hawk, the No. 5 pick in April's NFL draft, hasn't signed a contract and cannot report until he does.

The law firm includes Thomas Olejniczak, a member of the Packers' board of directors. His father, Dominic, was team president from 1958-1982.
