LB A.J. Hawk (2x All-American, Lombardi Trophy, National Champion, Super Bowl Champion)

Gotta love AJ's chances in this award. Of the other guys, only Ryans and Tapp have received much national talk this year.

Those are the only legit competitors besides AJ IMO...AJ should get props from Derrick Johnson (after AJ's performance against Texas) and Leonhard (Big 10 bias )though...I have no idea how many other voters there are, but I think he stands a chance

Hawk Among The 3 Butkus Finalists for 2005

Hawk Among 2005 Butkus Award Finalists
(link)
ORLANDO- The Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc. (DACO), the organization which annually presents the prestigious Butkus Award to the nation's best collegiate linebacker has announced the three finalists for this year's award. In alphabetical order, the 2005 Butkus Award finalists are A.J. Hawk (Ohio State), Paul Posluszny (Penn State) and DeMeco Ryans (Alabama). The Butkus Award and the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc. are celebrating their 21st anniversary in 2005. Each represented school has had one Butkus Award winner in the award's history. The list of past Butkus Award winners representing the 2005 finalist's schools include: LaVar Arrington (Penn State-1999); Andy Katzenmoyer (Ohio State-1997) and the late Derrick Thomas (Alabama-1988). Additional Butkus Award finalists have been represented by Penn State's Shane Conlan (1986), Andre Collins (1989) and Brandon Short (1999); Alabama's Keith McCants (1989) and Cornelius Bennett (1986) and for Ohio State, Chris Spielman was a finalist in 1986 and 1987. In 1986 all three schools had Butkus Award finalists with Conlan, Bennett and Spielman, where that year's award went to Oklahoma's Brain Bosworth for his second Butkus Award honor. Bosworth is the only linebacker to win the Butkus Award twice. In 1991, the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando went from five to three finalists.
The 2005 Butkus Award winner will be announced Saturday, December 10, 2005 at the Butkus Award Gala at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, FL. The Butkus Award will be presented to the winner by the award's namesake former University of Illinois and Chicago Bear NFL Hall of Fame member, Dick Butkus. The finalists, their coaches and families are invited to attend the Butkus Award Gala festivities including a welcome reception, golf tournament and silent auction.

For an entire off-season, and a healthy portion of the regular season too, all we heard or read from just about any source was how Iowa's Greenway and Hodge anchored 'arguably the nations top linebacking corp,' or how FSU's Sims and Nicholson were 'arguably the nations top linebacking corp.'

All of us, of course, knew there was never any argument to begin with.

Nothing makes me happier than to read that not one of those clowns is up for any awards whatsoever.

In summary, Hawk has as many sacks, as many interceptions, as many forced fumbles, and as many pass break-ups as both Posluszny and Ryans combined, along with having more tackles-for-loss than either.

Are we confident in those stats? 77 deleted his post. OK, these are from an NCAA site:

It's disappointing that Carpenter is getting overlooked since he's on the same team as Hawk. Bobby has 11 TFL, 8 Sacks and 2 PBU and he can't even get on a semi-finalist watch list.

They had Herbstreit and Mark (complete know-nothing dumbass) May on SportsCenter, same as every Thursday at this time. DPatrick asked them about the Butkus Award, so of course Herbie said it should go to AJ. I say "of course" because herbie is a good, objective analyst; not because he is from OSU. Mark (complete know-nothing dumbass) May of course had to go with the guy from Alabama because he "goes from sideline-to-sideline". If that's not proof positive that he's never seen Hawk play, then the word "proof" should be stricken from the dictionary.

Hawk will win it...he's been an amazing linebacker since he came to Ohio State...and it's an award that is based on things like that, as well as this year. His past...the fact that he was the frontrunner coming in, and the fact that he lived up to all the hype, will win it for him. And he is the best linebacker in the country. He will get drafted first.
