CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- For the second time in three days, Louisville defensive end Elvis Dumervil has been named a finalist for a major award.
Dumervil was among five finalists announced Thursday for the 2005 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, awarded to the best defensive player in the country by the Football Writers Association of American and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.
Also named finalists were Penn State end Tamba Hali, Oregon tackle Haloti Ngata, Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans and Virginia Tech cornerback Jimmy Williams. The winner will be announced Dec. 5.
On Tuesday, Dumervil was named one of four finalists for the 36th Rotary Lombardi Award, which is given to the nation's top lineman. The 6-foot, 256-pound Dumervil leads the nation with 20 sacks and a record 10 forced fumbles.
The 6-3, 267-pound Hali has 16 tackles for loss and 11 sacks for the Nittany Lions, who can secure their first Big Ten Conference title since 1994 with a win at Michigan State on Saturday.
The only junior finalist, the 6-5, 338-pound Ngata also is a candidate for the Outland Trophy, which the FWAA awards to the top interior lineman.
The 6-2, 232-pound Ryans is the leader of a Crimson Tide defense that ranks third in the country against the rush, while the 6-3, 216-pound Williams guides a Hokies secondary that is second nationally in passing defense.
Texas linebacker Derrick Johnson won the award last year.
