LB A.J. Hawk (2x All-American, Lombardi Trophy, National Champion, Super Bowl Champion)

See, you can't even give Vince credit for being as good as he is. On that long play to Pittman, he had Shlegel bull-rushing him up the middle. He stepped to the side and let all 250 lbs. of Middle Linebacker fall to the ground in a failed attempt to bring him down. THEN, he threw a strike to a wide open Pittman. Most QB's duck for cover in that situation.

What's does his juking out Schlegel have to do with Hawk? You think Young would've been able to do that to Hawk? Unlikely, since he didn't do it one single time the rest of the night...

I agree Hawk is more deserving than Quinn, but OSU has two losses too (despite MSU & Iowa being better wins than ND has)

Three Heisman finalists are locks: Reggie Bush, Vince Young, and Matt Leinart. At this point, the two other New York-bound players should be Maurice Jones-Drew (who is doing more than he is on a week to week basis?) and A.J. Hawk. A defensive player of Hawk’s quality had better get a ticket to the Downtown Athletic Club. Extra note: Brady Quinn should NOT be invited. He has been very good this year, but not great. Let’s recall how poor he was last season. He’s much improved, but not Heisman-worthy. Bush and Leinart aren’t candidates because they play for USC, a high-profile team in a big media market; they’re Heisman candidates because they play for USC, the No. 1 team and defending national champion. Just the same, Quinn should not be invited to New York because he plays for Notre Dame, the most storied team in all of college football; Quinn should go to NYC because he plays for a Notre Dame team that has a record better than 5-2 and has a winning record at home. The Irish have to be better for Quinn to be considered one of the five best players in the country. Hawk should be the fifth invitee, not the ND quarterback

exactly, I am the leader of the "Crouch should never have won" club. He wasn't that great of a running QB (like the Randle-El's, or the VY's), and he was an awful QB.

Awful? I wouldn't agree with that assessment at all...

Link

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior from Omaha, Neb., ran for 1,115 yards and 18 touchdowns, passed for 1,510 yards and seven scores and even caught a 63-yard TD pass in a big win over Oklahoma. He's one of only three major college quarterbacks to run for 3,000 yards and pass for 4,000 yards in a career.

His closest competition was Grossman, who could be argued as a product of his system ala Wuerffel/Matthews/insert any Spurrier QB and Dorsey who racked up major stats in the Big Least.

One of the greatest to ever win the trophy? Nope. Awful? Not fair. Beneficiary of a weak year for candidates? More than likely.

However, the kid was a player...definitely a gamer.

Hawk Named Quarter-Finalist For Lott Trophy

Oct. 26, 2005

NEWPORT BEACH, Ca. - Ohio State Linebacker A.J. Hawk has been named a quarter-finalist for the 2nd annual Lott Trophy, presented by The IMPACT Foundation of The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, Ca.

Hawk is a 6-1, 238-pound senior linebacker who is a returning All-American and averages 10.7 tackles per game.

Five of the quarter-finalists are on undefeated teams -- Defensive End Darryl Tapp of Virginia Tech, Safety Darnell Bing of USC, Defensive End Quentin Moses of Georgia, Linebacker Spencer Havner of UCLA and Linebacker DeMeco Ryans of Alabama.

The other quarter-finalists are linebackers Chad Greenway and Abdul Hodge of Iowa, Brandon Hoyte of Notre Dame, D'Qwell Jackson of Maryland and Moses Osemwegie of Vanderbilt. Safety Darrell Brooks of Arizona and Cornerback Antoine Huffman of Kentucky are also on the list as are Defensive End Elvis Dumervil of Louisville and Defensive Tackle Brennan Schmidt of Virginia.

In its second year, The Lott Trophy honors the college football Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. The student-athlete is judged on both his on-field performance and his off-field performance. The Lott Trophy is the first sports award based on personal character and is appropriately named after the legendary defensive back, Ronnie Lott. Last year's winner was David Pollack, the All-American defensive end from Georgia.

Semi-finalists will be announced Nov. 11. Voting for the winner will be conducted by Ernst & Young with ballots being sent to college offensive and defensive coordinators, national media, The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation Board of Directors, a Board of Advisors made up of former NFL players and coaches along with the three finalists from last year - Pollack, Derrick Johnson of Texas and Jim Leonhard of Wisconsin.

The winner will be announced on Dec. 11th at a gala black-tie Awards Banquet at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach.

Here's a quick look at the other 14 quarter-finalists:

Hoyte is a 5-11, 231-pound senior linebacker who is the captain of the Notre Dame team, leads the Irish in tackles (8 per game) and has been named to the academic all-district team twice. He is an honor student with a 3.35 GPA.

Huffman is a 6-0, 175-pound senior cornerback who leads the Wildcats in passes broken up. Huffman, with a 3.46 GPA, is a three time SEC Academic Honor Roll student. He won the 2004 Community Service Award and has already received his undergraduate degree in telecommunications.

Jackson is a 6-1, 231-pound senior linebacker who averages 13.83 tackles per game, the most in the country, and mentors elementary school children.

Moses is a 6-5, 248-pound junior defensive end who replaced All-American and first Lott Trophy winner David Pollack in the Bulldog lineup. He leads the unbeaten Bulldogs with seven sacks and has been on the SEC Academic honor roll.

Osemwegie is a 6-0, 230-pound senior linebacker, who averages 10.5 tackles per game has the spirit of Ronnie Lott, both on and off the field, according to his head football coach.

Ryans is a 6-2, 232-pound senior linebacker who is a three-time All-Academic SEC performer, graduating cum laude in December. He is the top tackler for The 7-0 Tide with 52, including 9 tackles for losses and already has 283 career tackles.

Tapp is a 6-1, 268-pound senior defensive end who anchors a defense that is No. 1 in the nation in scoring and No. 2 in yards allowed and has been given the President's Award for Leadership.

Hawk should win every award he is nominated for. Obviously this is a very bias opinion but it doesn't mean it's wrong. He is without a doubt the best linebacker and probably the best defensive player in the nation. He has never had off the field problems and honors his team and university. I can think of nobody I'd rather have representing my university on a national level then A.J.

:osu: Go Bucks!! :osu:

In this award i'm kinda of scared that Defensive End Elvis Dumervil of Louisville might win it, didn't he have like 6 sacks in one game and he has like 20 right now.

Yeah, doesn't he play on a Louisville team that has given up 40+ points twice this season? Enough said........

For what it's worth, those 6 sacks came against Kentucky, the same team that Indiana beat up on. Kentucky is 1-5 on the season with their only win coming against Idaho St. Their team has given up 21 sacks on the year so far........thats nearly 3-4 per game average. Keep in mind what their schedule has been.......
