LB coach says Packers' AJ Hawk could sit out Sunday

Friday, October 10, 2008

Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk might miss Sunday's game with the Seahawks because of a groin injury . Linebackers coach Winston Moss says he'll strongly recommend to coach Mike McCarthy that Hawk sit out if the injury isn't improved from what it was going into last Sunday's game against Atlanta.
Moss says Hawk, who suffered the injury September 28th at Tampa Bay, clearly wasn't himself against the Falcons. On Atlanta's first touchdown, Hawk correctly diagnosed the play but couldn't cover tight end Justin Peele because of the injury.

Notebook: Colts' no-huddle leaves Hawk odd man out

Defensive scheme favors Chillar

BY ROB DEMOVSKY AND PETE DOUGHERTY ? [email protected] ? October 19, 2008

The Green Bay Packers? defensive game plan Sunday essentially sidelined linebacker A.J. Hawk, the No. 5 pick overall in the 2006 draft.
Defensive coordinator Bob Sanders played a nickel defense (two linebackers, five defensive backs) to match up with Indianapolis? no-huddle offense that features three receivers, a tight end and one running back. In his two-plus seasons with the team, Hawk rarely has left the field and has been one of the two linebackers, along with Nick Barnett, in the nickel, except for in recent weeks when he?s come out of games occasionally because of a strained groin.

Shortchanged by the nickel?

Linebacker glut pares Hawk's playing time

By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel
Posted: Oct. 29, 2008
Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers have four linebackers who have been full-time starters in the NFL, and they intend to use all of them this season.
Most of the time, however, only two or three of them can be on the field at the same time, which means someone's playing time isn't going to be what it should be.
Case in point: A.J. Hawk.
Against Indianapolis, Hawk's usual spot in the nickel defense was taken over by free agent Brandon Chillar, who was a starter with St. Louis last season and specializes in covering tight ends. Hawk played less than five snaps in the game, because the Packers stayed in the nickel (five defensive backs, two linebackers) for most of the game.
After the game, coach Mike McCarthy mentioned that Hawk was given time to heal an injured groin. But going into the Tennessee game this week, McCarthy didn't sound like someone who was thinking about taking Chillar out of the nickel.
"Brandon has played well with his opportunity," McCarthy said "It's no different on offense. Sometimes I put things in conceptually in a certain personnel group.
"I think we have to have the same approach on defense."
According to McCarthy, Hawk returned from the bye looking more like his old self. McCarthy did not say what the linebacker's role would be Sunday besides being the starter on the weak side.
Since his rookie season, the only time Hawk has come off the field was when the Packers went to six defensive backs (dime package), leaving Nick Barnett as the lone linebacker.
But the Packers have struggled to cover tight ends the last two years and Chillar was signed, because he excels in that area. Hawk was handling those duties for the most part this year, but Chillar was used extensively against Dallas' Jason Witten and then exclusively against the Colts' Dallas Clark.

Packers: Depth on defense sends Hawk to sidelines
By JASON WILDE

GREEN BAY ? Whenever NFL coaches find themselves with a surplus of viable starting candidates at a particular position, they invariably say the same thing about the situation.
It's a good problem to have.
And so, as the Green Bay Packers enter the second-half of their 16-game season with Sunday's showdown against Minnesota ? with whom they are tied for second in the NFC North at 4-4 ? they do so with four linebackers, three safeties and three cornerbacks worthy of starting ? one more than necessary at each positions.

But Packers coach Mike McCarthy doesn't see it as a good problem to have.
"It's a great problem to have," McCarthy said last week. "You cannot have enough good football players. Those are great problems to have. The medical condition of your football team is probably talked about more than anything. I know I stand up here (and talk about) sprains and strains and fractures. It's important. Just to have them available is great."
It also could potentially create dissent, however, if any of the players whose jobs are affected by the team's newfound health were to allow it.
With Pro Bowl cornerback Al Harris returning in Sunday's loss to undefeated Tennessee after missing four games with a lacerated spleen, Tramon Williams, who played well in his place (three interceptions), returned to the nickelback job.

With Chillar playing all the nickel snaps, Hawk played just three plays against the Colts. He has never been on the bench in his life ? not in Pop Warner, high school or Ohio State ? having always been an every-down player. The only time he'd come off the field with the Packers had been in the little-used dime defense, in which only one linebacker, Nick Barnett, is on the field.
"I'm not (upset). Not at all. But the coaches know I don't want to come off the field. They know that," Hawk said. "But regardless, it's kind of out of my hands now, and whenever I am in, I'm going to do my job. I don't know what we're doing."
Asked whether Hawk has taken a step back in coverage this season, or if Chillar simply fits the scheme better because of coverage is his strength, Moss replied, "They're exactly what they are. Chillar comes in here with excellent athleticism and a pass-coverage background, A.J. comes with a run-first toughness background, and they're exactly what they are. Can A.J. still cover the pass? Yes. Can Brandon still play the run and is he overall good in the scheme? Absolutely."

Packers: Hawk now the man in the middle
By JASON WILDE
[email protected]

GREEN BAY ? The news flash came to Brian Urlacher during Wednesday's conference call. The Chicago Bears' all-pro middle linebacker had no idea his counterpart with the Green Bay Packers, Nick Barnett, had suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his right knee Sunday at Minnesota.

"What happened to him?" Urlacher asked. Given the bad news, Urlacher sounded genuinely bummed. "Aw, that really stinks, man," he said. "He's a good player."

Then, unprompted, Urlacher offered his conjecture on the Packers' replacement plan for Sunday's game against the Bears at Lambeau Field. "I'm sure they'll put (A.J.) Hawk ..." he began, before stopping himself. "I mean, I don't know what they'll do."

Aw, sure you do Brian.

While Packers coach Mike McCarthy wouldn't say definitively that he's going in that direction, the Packers are in fact moving Hawk from his will linebacker spot and into the middle to replace Barnett, with No. 4 linebacker Brandon Chillar moving into the starting lineup at Hawk's spot. Desmond Bishop, who replaced Barnett during the loss to the Vikings, will back up at all three spots.

McCarthy said in his conference call with Chicago-area reporters that he would "rotate those three guys in," and he said during his news conference that "they're all going to be ready," although he acknowledged that by watching practice, it wasn't too hard to figure out what was going on.

"A.J. is getting a lot of work there," McCarthy said.

"Playing 'mike,' it's different," Hawk said after taking most of the practice snaps Wednesday in the middle. "When it comes down to it, it's all just still football. ... As linebackers, we try to tackle the guy with the ball. So that's my goal."

Hawk and Barnett had been the two defensive players with radio headsets in their helmets, so Hawk, who took over the defensive play-calling duties from Barnett after the injury, expects to do so again against the Bears.

"I called the defense in college; it's not too hard. I don't mind doing that," Hawk said. "I like being in there, in control of the huddle, and calling the defense, it keeps you in the game. It's not too big an adjustment for me."

Hawk moves into middle of Pack's D

Associated Press

Thursday, November 13, 2008

GREEN BAY, Wis. ? The Green Bay Packers are working through a few different options to replace injured middle linebacker Nick Barnett, but it appears they've settled on the idea of moving A.J. Hawk inside.
Hawk, a former Centerville High School and Ohio State standout who has been the Packers' starting weak-side linebacker since the team took him in the first round of the 2006 draft, shifted to the middle of the Packers' base defense during the portion of practice Wednesday, Nov. 12, that was open to the media.
Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said afterward that Hawk was one of three players who took practice repetitions at middle linebacker but acknowledged that Hawk "is getting a lot of work there."
Hawk said he's ready for the challenge.

Packers: Hawk leads dominating defense
By JON MASSON
For the State Journal

GREEN BAY ? In Nick Barnett's absence, Green Bay linebacker A.J. Hawk became the man in the middle.
That shifted his perspective ? from his previous outside point of view.
And what he saw Sunday ? particularly the work done by the Packers' defensive line in front of him ? was quite pleasing to the eye.

Brad Zimanek column: 'Mission accomplished' for Hawk

By Brad Zimanek ? November 16, 2008

When A.J. Hawk was picked fifth overall in the 2006 NFL Draft, many people predicted he would be a better middle than outside linebacker. But the Packers never used Hawk in that role until Sunday against Chicago when he was needed to replace injured team leader Nick Barnett.
Looking at Green Bay?s 37-3 rout over division rival Bears and hearing enough positive feedback from his teammates prove that Game 1 was an unmistakable success. ?A.J.?s at my position so I?m going to spend my attention looking right there,? said Barnett, who is not used to being a luxury box observer. ?I?m not a coach, so I don?t want to critique him too much, but there?s no question he did what he was supposed to do.?
