George making free agent visit to Cowboys

IRVING, Texas -- Eddie George's first visit as a free agent will be with the Dallas Cowboys on Friday.
Agent Lamont Smith said it's no coincidence that George's first trip since the running back was released by the Tennessee Titans is to Dallas.
"It's an indication of his priority," Smith told the Associated Press on Thursday. "It's high on his list, very high on his list."
Smith said it didn't matter who made the first call but both sides were very interested in getting a deal done quickly. "We'll have to see if we will," Smith said.
The Cowboys open training camp next weekend in Oxnard, Calif.
George rushed for more than 10,000 yards in eight years for the Titans. The team granted his request for release Wednesday in a salary-cap move.
The Titans wanted him back, but at a reduced salary. The team's final offer was $1.5 million in base salary -- considerably less than the $4.25 million he expected to make this season.
George, who has never missed a start in his career, was popular with Titans fans, but his production slipped in recent years. In 2000, he ran for 1,509 yards, averaging 3.7 yards per carry. Last season, his average fell to 3.3 yards as he rushed for 1,031 yards. He turns 31 in September.
The Cowboys have plenty of room under the salary cap to be able to afford George.
Dallas is unsettled at running back. The starter going into training camp is rookie Julius Jones, a second-round pick from Notre Dame.
Cowboys officials could not be immediately reached by telephone for comment.
