The dog that died was in a crate. The other two were not. Apparently, there was a doggie door so they could go outside. Could have been water outside from a sprinkler system or pool.

I am so glad that he got to reprise his character in Top Gun. Say what you like about Tom Cruise, but his insistence on that was no doubt about the characters but also a class act toward a fellow actor
