Yes, there was another dog outside. Also, they found an open pill bottle with pills scattered around the wife's body. The detectives said there was no sign of a gas leak

Gene's pacemaker recorded it's last even Feburary 17th. His wife was mummified. Just speculation but maybe the dogs that survived were eating the dead.
