The dog that died was in a crate. The other two were not. Apparently, there was a doggie door so they could go outside. Could have been water outside from a sprinkler system or pool.

I read A Season on the Brink and A Season Inside when I was young and really enjoyed them. Feinstein was a gifted writer.
