Bourdain's suicide was a real gut punch to wake up to this morning.
Yeah. Still trying to process that. Keep thinking of him and Iggy Pop just standing on the beach. It was an astonishingly sublime moment for unscripted tv. First time he filmed in Portland a chef friend of mine was with a small group that went out drinking with him. They took him to a dive called Bar of the Gods (the BOG). Seems fitting to hoist one there tonight.

This one hits hard. He was one of the few voices who spoke truth to power in the mainstream media whether to a Turkish autocrat, pompous Bay Area chef or Israeli hardliner, he really had no fucks to give. Anyone who hated Henry Kissinger as much as he loved Curtis Mayfield and the Ramones was clearly on the right side of history. Sadly, ironic how the person that I compared him to most--Hunter S. Thompson--also committed suicide.

BOURDAIN: "Aqualung," Jethro Tull, I whipped into a murderous rage right away.

THOMPSON: Even now?

BOURDAIN: Even now. I'm angry that that band ever existed. I hate that whole Englishy, old, bar minstrelly, stand-on-one-leg mother (EXPLETIVE DELETED). I hate that (EXPLETIVE DELETED).

(LAUGHTER)

BOURDAIN: You never know when you play music, were they molested by a rodeo clown to that song.

(CROSSTALK)

BOURDAIN: And Jethro Tull is my version of that.

"When the restaurant opened, we'd begin every shift with a solemn invocation of the first moments of Apocalypse Now, our favorite movie. Emulating the title sequence, we'd play the soundtrack album, choppers coming in low and fast, the whirr of the blades getting louder and more unearthly, and just before Jim Morrison kicked in with the first few words, 'This is the end ... my brand-new friend ... the end,' we'd soak the entire range-top with brandy and ignite it, causing a huge, napalm-like fireball to rush up into the hoods -- just like in the movie."

- Kitchen Confidential

Solemn invocation. Unearthly whir.

Kinda autobiographical.

Richard Harrison -- famously known as "Old Man" on "Pawn Stars" -- has died, according to his son, Rick Harrison.

''The Old Man' Harrison passed away this morning surrounded by those he loved," Rick said Monday morning ... "He will be tremendously missed by our family, the team at Gold & Silver Pawn and his many fans the world over."

"He was my hero and I was fortunate to get a very cool ‘Old Man’ as my dad."

The circumstances surrounding his death are unclear. However, Harrison's appearances on the show over the last couple years were slim to none.

'Old Man' moved to Vegas back in the early '80s and opened the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop with his son, Rick.
