I watched it for the first time as well. I think the experience of being foreigners in Japan was supposed to be a metaphor for the characters disconnect from their spouses. Good soundtrack-Air,Jesus and Mary Chain,Roxy Music. I enjoyed the movie but I think a lot of critics went overboard in praising it. Having been to Tokyo for a week before, I will say that the film captures the feel of the place for an American visitor very well.

The actor in the background who plays the Soviet ambassador is having a hard time trying not to laugh out loud while Sellers is fighting with his own hand.
