RE: RockNRolla

Snatch and LSn2SB had amazingly funny good guys (preferably with hilarious sidekicks) and some sick bad guys (brick top, and that porn shop guy). They were both live with hilarious characters (micky and bullet tooth tony and that guy with the son). And the stories were over-the-top ironic, which is charming and funny in its unique way.

RockNRolla was in the exact same mold... except everything was turned down about 3 notches. It was distinctly a Guy movie, in that it had the main group of protagonists, a bad guy who owes another bad guy stuff. But the characters just weren't funny, and the narration wasn't funny either.

It was so strange - during the movie, I was wondering when they were going to start speaking super fast, or having hilarious still-frames. Nope... And the characters were absolutely drawl. It was a displeasure to watch.

And also, Tom Wilkinson had a weak performance this time around.

There were a few chuckle moments - but clearly not on the same level as Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

I mean, everyone can remember the best scenes from both of those movies (SPOILERS: Micky's last fight, the poker game) very clearly. That's because they were awesome scenes. In my opinion, not any scenes like that from RockNRolla.

I'm sure Guy will make a better movie in the future - every director has a dud.

But I'd like to hear what someone who enjoyed the movie has to say.

Don't forget before he did this, he did 'Swept Away', or whatever the fuck that shipwrecked movie with his haggard ex-wife was. I think Madonna sucked the life out of him, bottled it and sold it as Kabbala Water.

Semi-Pro is one of the worst comedies I've ever seen, if not the worst. That being said, I refuse to watch Friedberg & Seltzer films (Meet the Spartans, etc). Those guys actually take themselves seriously and think they're making legit comedies. :shake:

Black Knight featuring Martin Lawrence.

No comedy will ever equal that monstrisity. It is basically Cal Ripken's games played record at this point. It will never be beaten.

I still get calls from college buddies asking if I have lightened up on my stance of worst movie ever... I haven't.

Recently, and in no particular order...

The 39 Steps--the 1935 original not the compromised second draft

The Thin Man--really need to go out and get the rest of The Thin Man dvd's...extremely entertaining.

The Blues Brothers--for the thousandth time...keeps getting better

The Hustler

On the television side, I've just started working my way through the old Peter Gunn series on dvd.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I'm watching Goldfinger right now, but will turn it off when the second running of tonight's Battlestar Galactica comes on at the top of the hour.
Thats miserable. Can I send you some DVDs????
I can get bootleg DVDs in every subway station for less than 2 dollars but I don't have a DVD player. Sometimes I get tired of watching something on my computer. Also, any movie that I buy here I have to keep here because DVDs from Asia don't play in American DVD players (computers adjust somehow).

Ohhhh Memoirs of a Geisha is on now. Not bad!
