Deer Hunter.

Am I the only person that thinks that this movie is the most over rated movie of all time?
I agree. Long, boring, and often just plain stupid. The only interesting aspect of the movie from my persepctive were the Cleveland scenes (although the movie is set in Pittsburgh, many of the scenes were actually shot in Cleveland).

Metropolis is amazing. Another must see is The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
One of my top-5 movies of all time....

EDIT: Referring to Caligari.... Metropolis is top 25 or so....

Are you sure you didn't post those comments out of order? :tongue2:

Metropolis is certainly impressive visually and in terms of production for its time, but geez, that's two and half long German hours I don't need to repeat anytime soon... I'm much more of a Deer Hunter man myself (though I don't deny it's somewhat overrated by diehards as well).

Eh, to each his own. I prefer movies that have strong visual impact, and I'm not so concerned with plot, dialogue, character development, etc. - that's what books are for. Thus, I love movies like Eraserhead, Blade Runner, and Last Year at Marienbad that some critics really hate because they are "simply" visual spectacles.

Here are a couple of more reviews:

The Cannibals. A truly unique and bizarre blend of humor, satire, opera, and cannibalism. By the famed Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira, the film is in Portuguese with subtitles. For those of you who like to venture out of the mainstream when it comes to movies, take a chance on this one. 9.2/10

Red Road. A policewoman in Glascow, Scotland, uses the city's security camera system to stalk a male who has wronged her. Intense, chilling, creepy, scary, gross ... but never dull. A fascinating look at obsession and revenge, but the ending is a bit flat. Heavy Scottish accents, but the DVD does contain a subtitle option. 7.5/10

Storytelling. Picked t up randomly at the library. Directed by Todd Solondz (Happiness, Welcome to the Dollhouse). It's actually two unrelated parts; the first centers around Selma Blair as a college student dealing with relationships and classroom politics in a writing class taught by a renowned author. The second concerns a slacker high school kid (father played by John Goodman) who becomes the subject of a documentary by a ne'er-do-well failed actor (Paul Giamatti). Very quirky an provocative, lots of funny moments, some akward (but strangely poignant) moments. The second part is more substantial (Giamatti is excellent), but Blair gets naked in the first. Worth a watch if you like quirky movies.
