Interesting resignation. Our friend Willie Lyles again.

Just two days before the Trojans? opener against Minnesota, USC announced today that assistant football coach Willie Mack Garza had resigned his position.

USC?s official statement:
USC secondary coach Willie Mack Garza has resigned for personal reasons.
?I stepped down today from my coaching duties at USC,? said Garza, who was in his second year at USC. ?I have some personal issues unrelated to USC that I need to address. I wish the Trojans the best and I am sorry I won?t be with them in what I know will be a very successful season.?
Garza?s resignation is a direct result of comments made to NCAA investigators earlier this week by former recruiting service operator Willie Lyles. In those comments, Lyles revealed to NCAA officials that he had previously had a working relationship with Garza.
Garza spent last season at USC and was hired by current Trojan Coach Lane Kiffin in a similar capacity at Tennessee, serving as an assistant coach for the Volunteers in 2009.

Kiffin needs some new excuses

USC was in the thick of Saturday's game at Arizona State before the Sun Devils tacked 15 points on in the fourth quarter. Lane Kiffin's constant references to USC struggling because it is a young team wear thinner each week. The defensive line is perhaps the most experienced group on the team and performed poorly against Arizona State. QB Matt Barkley is a junior and 3-year starter. T.J. McDonald is a junior (and I don't really blame him for all those personal fouls because he is playing hard and making plays). Oh, and who led USC in tackles last night? Freshman linebacker Dion Bailey with 10. So Kiffin needs some fresh excuses.

NCAA could open new case against USC

Lane Kiffin insisted Tuesday he had "no knowledge" of Willie Mack Garza's dealings with the controversial Will Lyles. But Kiffin still might have to answer to the NCAA. Yahoo! Sports reported Monday that Garza sent Lyles $1,500 to fund the airfare for an unofficial recruiting visit to Tennessee by prospect Lache Seastrunk. Kiffin was Tennessee's coach at the time. Kiffin appeared before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions in June for alleged violations during his time at Tennessee. The committee did not sanction him, saying the violations were secondary in nature. But the NCAA could open a new case in light of the latest information, exposing Kiffin to possible punishment.
