Lamarcus Joyner (DB New York Jets)

Another good example of why you should be mindful of what you post and who will read it in recruiting threads, just with a slightly different twist here.

Consider the topic squashed, which it would be anyway given it's location in Lamarcus' thread.

From what I have seen out of the corners we're in on this year, I like JOYNER as my #1 and Cullen Christian as my #2. Chris Bryant from Glenville has been said to be a Safety, but with superb cover skills. I would liken him to Coleman (agree?). Joyner just has SO much talent, speed and athleticism. Christian looks like a physical kid, and with a former NFL player as his coach he is getting some quality teaching. These 3 guys would make me a very happy guy as our DB class. I do think we'll take 2 Safties at minimum, though, and possibly an "athlete" that could be a DB. We play A LOT of nickle, so we need these kinds of kids.

WOW! That has to be one of the most impressive highlight tapes I have seen in a while. Looks like he will be very good at the college level and has his head on straight. If we can get this kid up here, I'll need to buy a LJ jersey, stat.

I apologize for bringing back painful memories.

LOL.....well say what you want about o-state football not winning the BCS games. They beat the best college team I ve ever seen that yr. Interesting....You know I was talking with LJ a week ago about what if he had to play against Jacory, Aldarius, streeter, and spence in a big time nationally televised game one day. That could happen. How is OSU looking at corner for this yr and who are they recruiting this yr at corner.

OSU is facing a rebuilding effort at CB this year.

CB - Malcolm Jenkins (All-American, Thorpe winner, projected first rounder)
CB - Donald Washington - declared early (redshirt junior), came in with 05 class (Jenkins, Laurinaitis, Robiskie, Boone, etc) and is now leaving with them.
Backup CB - Lane (special teams stud) is graduating.

CB - Chimdi Chekwa returns, after starting last year. He has two years of eligibility remaining, but is draft eligible.

The most common names:
CB - Andre Amos is a common name behind the above players, but has battled injuries his entire career. It remains to be seen if he can stay healthy.
CB - Travis Howard, redshirted last year, from Miami Krop. Came in with Etienne Sabino.
CB - Devon Torrence is an ATH who has bounced between offense and defense, and also plays minor league baseball for the Astros. If they give him a bigger contract, he will likely leave Ohio State.
CB - Donnie Evege is also on roster, but has not generated much buzz from practice.

Then of course the incoming freshmen in the '09 class.

Corner is interesting this year. We have one locked up with Floridian Chimdi Chekwa. The other corner appears to be a battle between senior Andre Amos who has had an injury plagued career, and redshirt freshman Travis Howard (another Floridian).

There's a lot of inexperience behind those guys.

Ohio State has Justin Green (KY), Corey Brown (might be a WR-PA), C.J. Barnett (OH), and Domink Clarke (MD) coming in this year. It will be interesting to se who stays at CB, gets moved to offense, or even safety.

Regardless, I'd imagine there'd be a pretty good chance of Lamarcus getting early PT with as much nickle as the Bucks play.

To give a little more detail: Green & Brown could end up on offense (Brown was a standout at WR in the Army AA practices). Barnett could end up at safety. Clarke is the only player I would pencil in at CB with any confidence.

Agreed. Tressel loves DB more than any position, yet there always seems to be early PT for the talented ones.

Jenkins was playing vs Texas in september as a true frosh, and started 3.5 years. Dustin Fox started 4 years. Youboty was starting as a freshman. Washington and Chekwa split time with starters as freshmen.

Hey one concern....And this is the biggest knock on OSU down here in the Mia...How does OSU look after its players. Like if they got injured and couldn't play, played but didnt finish on time and had to continue classes, or even made a bad decision and got in some sort of trouble? Do they kick them to the curb or just forget about them and leave them on their own. Thats what I be hearing players down here told. I know one of my best friends thinks OSU threw M. Clarett under the bus and didnt have his back. You know..does Tressel stand up for all his players and not just a certain section.

Maurice Clarett was quoted in a newspaper article last year that he and Jim Tressel talk once a week. I think after Mo C tried to bring tOSU and JT down, the fact that JT still makes time to talk to him on a weekly basis speaks to JT's character. Maurice was a mixed up kid, looking for attention, and an up and coming ESPN reporter (Tom Friend) took advantage and launched his own career. Maurice made a lot of bad decesions that lead to that article....taking money from the wrong people, and not being able to pay it back mostly. Even prior to that, attempting to change the NFL draft rules and forego his remaining college eligibility was downright stupid.

To answer your question in regards to players who have gotten in trouble:

Donald Washington
Nathan Williams
Ray Small
Troy Smith
Santonio Holmes
Alex Boone

All guys off the top of my head that were arressted/in trouble that not only didn't get booted from the team, but learned from their mistakes and became better people. Hopefully, Nathan learns his lesson.

Like any program, a few guys have left the team for various reasons.....and JT is known to have a doghouse. But there are consequences to bad choices, it's how you respond after the mistake. Guys like Santonio, Troy, and Alex are all great examples of that. Troy often credits JT form making him the man he is today.

If Tress gives a schollie he is going to honor it...Injuries or what not...

Obvioulsy if the kid doesn't put the effort in and get the grades, he gets in trouble bad enough to be kicked off the team he will...

Tress still talks to MoC, he is still part of the family so to speak, even tho at a distance, for all that he did and put us thru, with his false allegations and then just his whole messed up situation...

Guys that come to mind might be Jon Skinner in this past class...He was injured most of his career and missed all this past year...

Tress does his best to make it as much of a family atmosphere, and if a kid does get in trouble he will punish them, but he will try and help them and have them better themselves because of it...Two opposite situations would be Nate Williams...Got in trouble before the bowl game, Tress handled it, and now it seems he has it back together and it is going to better him in the long run...Then you have a guy like Eugene Clifford, 5 star all the talent in the world, got caught smokin' before he came here, then once he was here, and Tress handled it in house...Tried to help the kid...Then the third time he let him go, as he had tried to give him lots of chances...

I loathe to stray too far off topic, but.....Considering the charges leveled against Belle Glade's Albert Dukes, I'd say he stands by his players just fine. A lot of coaches would have tossed him to the curb when the (nationally reported) statutory rape charges against him were filed. Not only did Tressel stick by him through the investigation (charges were eventually dropped), but he made sure Dukes stayed in school and got his degree so that he could transfer to Valdosta State for his final year to take advantage of the NCAA graduate transfer rule.

The issues with Clarett were completely out of Tressel's control. The athletic director at the time made the decision to suspend him-- and considering the NCAA cloud Clarett was under at the time, it would have been stupid to allow him to play (OSU would have had to forfeit games had he played in them and had anything come of the investigation). FYI, Tressel still visits Maurice Clarett in prison to talk with him. The easy thing would have been to forget about him, ignore him, and move on.

To echo jwinslow's thoughts in an earlier post, I sincerely hope this topic will now be squashed with my response. Lamarcus Joyner seems to have enough interest in OSU, and certainly enough talent, to have his thread veer off-topic too many times.

Tressel takes care of his guys. Most these dudes who have gotten the boot have broken rules over and over and over again. I can't think of too many kids who didn't get second chances and in some cases third chances.

The whole team is a family. Look no further than Gentry (although he was a walk-on). Kid gets paralyzed in practice 3 yrs ago, but he's at every practice, every game, went out to the middle of the field in his wheel chair for the coin toss at the Fiesta Bowl..

Only players that have problems with Tressel are ones who continually break the rules.

There's a long list of players who have been given second and third chances... none more visible than Troy Smith.

Louis Irizarry is another example of sticking by his guys. Irizarry went to prison for robbing an OSU student (while already on probation for another incident). Tressel kept in contact while there and helped him land on his feet when he was released, guiding him to his former school at Youngstown State.

Feel free to ask any other questions, genron. If we ever get too far off-topic, we can split off the discussion into another thread.

Naw, this is a great topic for this tread. I wouldnt be asking if it wasn't a topic of high interest. And you guys are wonderful, very knowledgable of your program. Heck, i didn't know M. Clarett was in jail. Especially bringing up the name of Troy Smith whom most HS players have a ton of respect for. He's one of the top names that players know. Ive shown LJ this board and he gets excited about the different info and things written on here. Like I said, people who dont know about the program down here think Tressel will drop you in a minute. Thats the pitch of some colleges too. But thank you for your patience. Ill be sure LJ looks at this and blow those sayings down. This info is appropriate for a player moving that far from the only environment they ever knew.
