Kirk Ferentz (four more B1G COY Awards than Tressel and Meyer combined)

I'm not enamored with Kirk Ferentz; however, I really think he is doing an excellent job at Iowa. He seems to consistantly get more from less talent than anyone else in the Big 10. I'm pretty sure that Iowa doesn't have that many "top 100 division 1A football prospects" so he has been working primarily with everyone else's leftovers (i.e. he only the gets out of state players from a state (like Ohio) that the major school in that state (like Ohio State) doesn't offer a scholarship to, etc.).

Arkansas fans are inherently suspicious of any argument that starts with 'more from less'; we had to listen to that garbage for 10 years, and kept a 7 win coach in place.

I was in that same camp of admiration until this year. He let three conference games get away from him in the last half of the season and got beat by a pretty ordinary Arizona team early on.

One thing remains; he's drawing talent to Iowa City. His O-line and D- Line match up favorably against the best in the Big 10. He's developing runners and receivers.

The last time they had this much preseason hype was 05. How did that work out?

He's a nice coach, but so are Fitzgerald & Dantonio at developing average talent.

For his contract, he should be translating his hype into something more consistent on the field and he simply has not done so.

He isn't "developing" shit. Coach Ginn buses these kids to Iowa for a look. DJK fell into Ferentz's lap because OSU didn't have room for him (took Ray Small instead).
Kirk Ferentz wasn't developing WRs until RR was too stupid to retain WR coach Soup Campbell. Great hire by KF, but that is due to a very recent hire, not KF's pedigree.

Johnson - Koulianis, Shon Green, ... I don't care how he gets them, he gets results. Finally, are you suggesting that Tressel got the better deal when DJK ended up in Iowa City and Ray Small in Columbus?

Not at all. How do you even infer that?

Shonn Greene and Dallas Clark were two "real" developmental guys at skill positions, but it's not like Ferentz is cranking out backs and receivers left and right or coaching up a bunch of no-talent kids he's finding on Iowa farms. TE's? OK. Runners and receivers? No.

He's continuing along the exact same career path of Hayden Fry: A lot of 8-4 and 7-5 type seasons occasionally broken up with the odd 10 win season and producing a Tavian Banks.

OK, I'm not afraid to say it, I think he's an average coach. Period. Doesn't mean he isn't a good man. Doesn't mean college football isn't better with him in it. I just think he's an average coach. Channeling his inner Les Miles during the Wisconsin game (and it's far from the first time) I think proved that. Being 7-5-owa for 3/5 of his coaching tenure I think proves that. Consistently beating some teams (Penn State, Illinois) while basically never beating others (Ohio State, Northwestern) I think also proves that. Having what many called the best lines in America with a ton of skill position talent and basically ending up with a team that quit on him the final game of a 5 loss season also proves that. I don't see a Jim Tressel coached team starting the season in the top 10 and ending up 7-5. I just don't see it happening. The guy gets way too much credit, end of story. At least, end of my story
