Kirk Ferentz abruptly dissolves Iowa football diversity advisory committee
Contentious meeting with volunteers preceded the move

A year and a half after the University of Iowa Athletics Department formed an alumni advisory committee in the wake of players alleging the football program fostered a culture of racism and bullying, head coach Kirk Ferentz last week abruptly dissolved the volunteer group.

“I have come to a decision that this is an appropriate time to dissolve our committee as it stands currently,” Ferentz wrote in a Tuesday email to the 10-member group of football alumni who have worked since summer 2020 to improve the program’s culture. “As we start a new calendar year and prepare to move forward with our preparation for the 2022 season, I am giving thought to how we restructure the committee/board in a way that best serves our program moving forward.”

Just sayin': It's interesting that he waited until after he got a new contract (through 2029 @ $7M per year) before doing this.

Kirk Ferentz: I did not dissolve advisory committee

The Iowa coach cleared the air after many assumed he chucked aside his accountability panel shortly after inking a lucrative contract extension.

Since Iowa ended its season with a Citrus Bowl loss to Kentucky on New Year's Day, two things of note have happened. The program announced a 4-year contract extension for Kirk Ferentz that will take him past his 30th year on the job, and it was reported that Ferentz dissolved the advisory group that he'd worked with for the past year and a half.

As you'll recall, in the summer of 2020 stories emerged about the program's troubling culture under Ferentz's administration, particularly in regards to the (lack of) personal freedoms Black players enjoyed, as well as the way players were treated in the weight room by strength coach Chris Doyle. Again, it was primarily Black players sharing stories of bullying and harassment. Doyle lost his job, and there were calls for Ferentz to do the same, and so the advisory panel was formed.

And when it was reported that Ferentz dissolved the panel, shortly after he received an extension that guaranteed him another $24 million, innuendo rushed to fill the void created by lack of context. "I got my money, now I don't need to put up with this panel anymore."

On Monday, the eve of Iowa's first team activities of the 2022 season, Ferentz sent a letter to his players' parents that explains his side of the story. The panel wasn't disbanded, Ferentz said, it was just reset.

"It has been reported that this group has been disbanded or dissolved. That is not accurate," Ferentz writes. "Several members indicated their interest in stepping away from the committee in December, as they felt their work had made a real impact and the time was right to transition to a new group of voices. Therefore, I made the decision to release the members from their commitment following the bowl game and shared that with them via email. The group is ongoing, and I am in the process of inviting new members to join the group."

Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz does not plan to restructure diversity committee, per report

Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz has no plans to restructure and bring back his dissolved diversity committee, according to a report this week by The Center Rapids (Iowa) Gazette. Instead, according to The Gazette, Ferentz told the Des Moines (Iowa) Register that he consulted with Lew Montgomery, Iowa’s interim director of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), and that Montgomery suggested working internally with Iowa’s DEI staff, rather than form a new committee.

Ferentz also mentioned the possibility of bringing in former players regularly to speak with the team.

“I don’t see it being an organized group right now,” Ferentz told the Register. “The committee served its purpose, in my opinion. They were a great sounding board. But I think we’re in a pretty healthy thing right now.”

‘Not realistic’ to recruit in Ohio State’s neighborhood: Kirk Ferentz outlines plan to keep winning

In a recent, wide-ranging interview with the Des Moines Register’s Chad Leistikow, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz discussed some of the Hawkeyes’ approach to name, image and likeness moving forward. While final details from the university haven’t been released yet, Ferentz said to be on the lookout in the coming weeks.

Leistikow put together a really good write up for Des Moines Register and Hawk Central subscribers that shares Ferentz’s full thoughts from their conversation here.

Hawk Central released a portion of Leistikow’s conversation with Ferentz. In this part of their interview, Ferentz detailed how Iowa has won in the past and why it’s not necessarily feasible for the Hawkeyes to try to get in an NIL recruiting war with programs like Ohio State anyways.

Ferentz also outlined the keys of team building, a reminder that Ohio State’s approach is not the rule and guide for success for every team in Division I football.

“I think what you’ve seen is pretty consistent performance if you look at our win totals in our conference and even actually during that last period since 2015 or the last three years. They’re healthy numbers, and not that we don’t want to do better, not that we can’t do better and we’re always looking to do better, but I think you also have to have an appreciation for how those things happen.

“It’s usually not just about one series or one this or one that, it’s a bigger picture. And for us to win—at least in my estimation—for us to win consistently, we’ve got to play good team-concept football. That’s our best opportunity,” Ferentz said.

Again, as Iowa is ironing out its NIL collective and what the plan will be in the future, Ferentz isn’t suddenly under the impression that the Hawkeyes are fighting a losing recruiting battle against a program like Ohio State.

“Ohio State had two first-round draft picks in the (2023 NFL draft), two first-round receivers this past year. You could argue they’ve got the best quarterback in the country right now and you could also, at least I’ve heard NFL people say, the best receiver is coming back. So, potentially that was three first-rounders they had playing for them out there with a great quarterback.

“We aren’t in that neighborhood. That’s probably not realistic based on the last 20 years. It’s not realistic to think that we’re going to be in that neighborhood. So, you know, they’re doing what’s best for them and we’re trying to do what’s best for us. The ultimate objective is to try to win and find the best way to win, and that’s a combination of offense, defense and special teams, you know, just playing good, complementary football. That’s our, in my estimation, our best chance to be successful,” Ferentz said.

the prick keeps digging himself into a deeper hole.

my grandfather used to say that when you're trying to hide from situation by digging a hole to jump into, at some point it's better to just stop because the dirt you're trying to throw out of the hole all just lands back on your own head.

i counted 18 shrugs...
