Kelly Pavlik (official thread)

New champ Pavlik leaves check behind at hotel

New champ Pavlik leaves check behind at hotel - MMA/Boxing - Yahoo! Sports

New middleweight boxing champion Kelly Pavlik did everything he expected to do last week in Atlantic City, N.J.

He knocked out Jermain Taylor to win the WBC and WBO titles. He charmed the national media with his easy-going nature. And he made himself must-see television by putting on one of the best fights of the year.

"Pretty much everything went the way we planned it," Pavlik said Tuesday after a golf outing in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, where he was mobbed as if he were a rock star.

All of it went the way he planned, except for one fairly significant detail: Pavlik and his father, Mike Pavlik Sr., left Atlantic City without their paychecks.

Taylor says his camp may want him to take an interim fight, but Jermain says he is in charge and Pavlik should be next.

He added, "I'm going right back to Kelly, I'm the boss, I'm taking Kelly the next fight, no matter what anybody says, I want him the next fight."

Boxing gets a new star, and Youngstown cheers

The new middleweight champion of the world celebrated by buying some tires for his car. His trainer got up early as usual to spread asphalt on a few driveways.

And the people of Youngstown, Ohio enjoyed a double dose of good news for a town that rarely has any.

One day General Motors announces it will build a new car at the nearby Lordstown plant, ensuring the economic future of the hard-scrabble area for at least a few more years.

The next, Kelly Pavlik shocks everyone but himself and his pavement-laying trainer by knocking out Jermain Taylor to win the 160-pound title.

"It was almost like someone was writing a script," trainer Jack Loew said.

Pavlik's trainer halts his day job

Thursday, October 11, 2007
Jack Loew's days of sealing asphalt driveways are over.
The trainer for WBC-WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik said life could not be much better after his fighter won the 160-pound title in knockout fashion on Sept. 29. Stopping favored Jermain Taylor in the seventh round, in what was arguably the fight of the year, did wonders for giving up your day job.
Surviving a near-disastrous second round made it all the more dramatic.

Pavlik gets to throw more than punches

Tuesday, October 16, 2007
In this game, good things happen when you carry a knockout punch.
Since dispatching Jermain Taylor in the seventh round to win the WBC-WBO middleweight titles Sept. 29, Kelly Pavlik has been making the rounds.
Sunday, he was at Cleveland Browns Stadium for the ceremonial coin toss before the Browns-Dolphins game. Tonight, he will throw out the first pitch before Game 4 of the American League Championship Series between the Indians and Boston Red Sox at Jacobs Field.

Pavlik is fighting John Duddy January 26th in Atlantic City. For those that don't know about Duddy, he's 21-0 16 KO's. He's got a tuneup fight this week. He's got a huge Irish following. A.C will be even crazier than it was for the Taylor fight.
