At podium, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer called Hopkins "the Ghostbuster." Hopkins stated, "I never thought we would fight - I've always been a Pavlik fan - watching his fights against Miranda and Taylor. Yes, kelly has a punch but so do a lot of others who I have fought. I have nothing bad to say about Kelly - but I am going in to win." Pavlik commented, "He's still dangerous, tricky and I am going up against a Hall of Famer. I'm taking the fight very seriously. Boxing fans want to see big fights and this is a big one."[/FONT]

Jack Loew is not about to let Kelly Pavlik become the fall guy.
After last week's news conference announcing Pavlik's Oct. 18 bout against former middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins in Atlantic City, N.J., Pavlik's trainer said all the niceties of the day did not fool him.
"I don't think I've ever seen a more humble Bernard Hopkins," said Loew, who was working with his amateur contingent at the Ringside Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. "Maybe that's his game plan, but I'm not falling into it. I'm going to treat him as the old, nasty Bernard Hopkins."

A few weeks back, as Kelly Pavlik and Bernard Hopkins held press conferences in New York and Philadelphia to promote their upcoming battle on October 18th, Hopkins, who is known for his boisterous and unending mind games towards his future foes, spoke in respectful, downright reverential tones when it came to the current middleweight champion.

There would be no loud outbursts, proclamations of impending doom, no 'cracker', 'honky' or 'whitey' references. Just admiration for a young fighter he obviously admires.

Is Hopkins mellowing in his old age? Is this a kindler, gentler 'Executioner'? Whatever it is, Hopkins' demeanor took Pavlik by surprise.

?It really did; we were gearing up for the trash talk and everything else and it really did surprise me," admitted Pavlik this past week. "But who knows if he really respects me or if it's part of a mind game. But we're going into this fight the same way as every fight. The press conferences, the talk, the interviews, they don't really mean anything."

For all we know, in light of the PR hit that Hopkins took for his comments prior to his bout with Joe Calzaghe, this could all be part of a verbal rope-a-dope as he lies in wait for an overconfident Pavlik.

"It could be, there's no real way of taking it. And that's why it was weird not having Hopkins running his mouth, but when it comes down to training and when you're sparring and you're thinking about the fight, once fight night comes, no matter what happens in the press conference, that's the big thing, and that's what makes the difference," he says.

YOUNGSTOWN: Some close to middleweight boxing champion Kelly ''the Ghost'' Pavlik were a bit skeptical of Bernard ''the Executioner'' Hopkins' motive Wednesday.
Pavlik, a Youngstown native, and Hopkins, a future hall of famer from Philadelphia, will battle Oct. 18 in Atlantic City, N.J., for the title at 160 pounds.
At the Chevrolet Centre on Wednesday, in front of more than 500 raucous Pavlik supporters, Hopkins, known for his out-of-the-ring trash talking that routinely infuriates opponents, was subdued, even polite.
Gentlemanly in a sport that, once the gloves are on, isn't that gentlemanly, there was Hopkins praising Pavlik.
''Respect is what it is, and I'm not a guy that's in denial of what Kelly Pavlik has achieved,'' said Hopkins, who is 48-5-1 with 32 knockouts. ''Reporters asked me why I was being nice, and [said] 'This isn't you. Why are you giving Kelly respect?' Well, a good general always respects his enemy. . . . Kelly got the championship the way you're supposed to win it, the right, noncontroversial way in the ring.''
Pavlik, who is 34-0 with 30 knockouts and holder of the WBC, WBO and NABF belts, was just as cordial.
''I like fighting the best fighters in the world,'' he said. ''Bernard is a legendary fighter, and for me to go into our fight and not only beat him but beat him convincingly, that would probably be the biggest accomplishment you could have in your boxing career.''

Yeah, Pavlik really comes off as a bullshitter. Give me a break.

Calzaghe says that Pavlik ducked him for the first time when he signed on to fight Jermaine Taylor. Huh? I believe that Taylor was the bigger name at the time. Also, why wouldn't Pavlik try to win the belt at his natural weight first?

Calzaghe says that Pavlik ducked him for the second time when he agreed to a rematch with Taylor. Pretty sure there was a rematch clause controlling that one, genius.

Then Calzaghe basically criticizes Pavlik for fighting Bernard Hopkins next, saying that the only reason Pavlik will win is because Hopkins is too old. Hey dipshit, you are fighting Roy Jones, Jr. Hopkins is the tougher opponent of the two.

I don't imagine Pavlik ducking Calzaghe then, now, or in the future. And by the way, Pavlik is the bigger draw.

WBC and WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik has denied claims that he turned down the opportunity to fight Joe Calzaghe. Pavlik, who takes on Bernard Hopkins on the 18th of October, has said that no approach from the Calzaghe camp was ever made. In an interview on Setanta Sports News during Steve Bunce's Boxing Hour Pavlik said "I don't know why they keep throwing my name out there. They never ever offered us the fight. Calzaghe? Never. Calzaghe and his dad keep throwing shots at me for no reason. He has Roy Jones Junior in front of him. The chances of him getting past Roy Jones are very slim. There might not be any talk of me and Calzaghe in the future. If he doesn't get past Jones, there's no point in me fighting him."[/FONT]

So do Brady Quinn and Joe Jurevicius.
The Cleveland Browns have had him on their sideline for a couple of games the past two years, the Cleveland Indians put him in one of their jerseys and had him throw out the first pitch.
Last season, Jim Tressel showed his entire fight for the middleweight crown ? from his get-off-the-canvas gumption to his stunning knockout victory ? to his Ohio State players.
The Buckeyes coach unveiled one round before each game and once he had his team fully immersed in this real-life "Rocky" story, he landed his own KO punch.

I've always liked The Ghost, but this just made me like him much, much more. I watched it when it came on TV. His dad decked out in Ohio State gear, as well. Mayweather and Pavlik are my two favorites, but for two totally different reasons.

I like Floyd for the flash, the drama, and the shit talk. But he backs it up. I like Kelly for the no-nonsense, business-like approach. He's from NEO, and a blue-collar guy. And puches like a 300lb man.
