Pavlik eager to prove his worth

Kelly Pavlik said he has his boxing house back in order.
Coming off his surprising lopsided loss to Bernard Hopkins in October, the WBC/WBO middleweight champion claims his fans will see a much different fighter when he defends his titles against mandatory challenger Marco Antonio Rubio of Mexico on Feb. 21 in Youngstown.
"I've got a lot of proving to do," Pavlik said during a conference call Thursday. "I think it's great coming home. I have to come back to my hometown and look good."

With the 7,000-seat Chevrolet Centre nearly sold out, Pavlik and his trainer, Jack Loew, were confident there would not be a repeat performance of the lethargic effort against Hopkins. Still, a lot of the questions were directed about that outing, and the fighter did his best to explain it.
"The main thing was it was just a bad, bad night," said Pavlik, who besides battling the veteran Hopkins was trying to overcome a left elbow injury and a case of bronchitis. "After the first round, I was telling myself I was stiff. I'll give it a couple rounds to warm up. After three, four rounds, he kept landing a lot of punches.
"In the 11th round I hit him flush. It didn't cause any problems. That was it."
Pavlik said he needed a week to get over the loss. He said the best advice he got came from Hopkins right after the unanimous decision was announced.
"He came over to the corner and said, 'put that away,' " Pavlik said. "He pretty much told me not to let it bother me. A lot of great fighters have lost. He's lost four or five times and he's going to go down as one of the great fighters."

Pavlik said former Ohio State players A.J. Hawk and Troy Smith, along with coach Jim Tressel, are expected to be in attendance. Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, a Youngstown native, Browns quarterback Brady Quinn and former three-division champion Vinny Pazienza also will be in town.

Kelly is getting ready to open a sports bar and restraunt called The 13th Round. It's located in downtown Struthers Ohio. I drive by it on my way to work everyday. Looks like its going to a nice place. Wouldn't be suprised if you bumped into him there on saterdays in the fall. He's a bigtime Bucks fan so I'm sure he'll be there watching the game.

Boxing: Pavlik will defend middleweight title on Saturday

NEW YORK (AP) ? Rarely does a fighter get the biggest opportunity of his career by losing.

That's precisely what happened to Sergio Martinez.

The junior middlweight champion dropped a close and somewhat questionable decision to feared puncher Paul Williams in December, but Martinez performed so well and made such an entertaining bout that he was given another chance in the spotlight.

On Saturday night, Martinez will face middleweight king Kelly Pavlik at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., in the main event of an HBO-televised doubleheader. Super middleweight champion Lucian Bute faces Edison Miranda in the opener from Montreal.

"You will see a great fight and definitely I will take my championship back to Argentina," Martinez said Wednesday, during a final news conference for the event. "All this year I was praying for this particular fight and everybody knows I'm ready for a war."

Martinez beats Pavlik to claim middleweight title - San Jose Mercury News

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.—Sergio Martinez dominated the final five rounds Saturday night, winning a bloody and impressive unanimous decision over Kelly Pavlik to claim the WBO and WBC middleweight championships.
Martinez (45-2-2) moved up to 160 pounds to challenge Pavlik, who had never been defeated at his natural weight. But the junior middleweight champ put on marvelous display of speed and footwork, battering and frustrating the pride of Youngstown, Ohio.
When the final bell sounded, Martinez ran for the corner and leaped onto the ropes in victory. Pavlik solemnly raised his own arm, his face awash in blood—just as it been at the end of every round after the eighth.
Roberto Ramirez scored it 116-111, Barbara Perez had it 115-111 and Craig Metcalfe had it 115-112, all for Martinez. The Associated Press also scored it 115-112.
