Pavlik says he'll fight Godzilla if needed Discussions under way about battling Calzaghe

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.: Kelly Pavlik, the homegrown son of working-class America, took the mantle of middleweight king without ducking a soul.
Seven years after getting started and fresh off a dominant performance in his first title defense, stopping Gary Lockett Saturday night in the third round at Boardwalk Hall, the slender kid nicknamed ''the Ghost'' threw an open challenge to just about anyone.
''If they say you've got to fight Godzilla tomorrow to defend your titles, I'll probably go home and (complain) about it,'' Pavlik said, ''but I'll do it.''
''My job is to go in there and fight. If they put guys in there and tell me to go fight them, I'll fight them.''

Pavlik leaves no doubt against Lockett

Monday, June 09, 2008
As expected, it was strictly no contest.
Kelly Pavlik added another exclamation point to his role as the best middleweight out there as he took apart contender-turned-pretender Gary Lockett on Saturday night in Atlantic City, N.J.
Pavlik was systematic, to say the least, in breaking down Lockett, who lived up to his 15-to-1 underdog role in being overmatched from the start. Although Pavlik said he did get stung once by a Lockett right hand in the opening round, he had very little else to worry about as he outclassed the game Welshman.

Pavlik looks ahead toward unification

Monday, June 09, 2008David Weinberg
Special to The Plain Dealer
Atlantic City, N.J. -- After beating hapless Gary Lockett with the expected ease late Saturday night, WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik can now look forward to bigger and better fights.
The Youngstown native said after his third-round victory at Boardwalk Hall that he would eventually like to unify the title with fights against fellow middleweight champions Arthur Abraham (IBF) and Felix Sturm (WBA).
But he may get a chance to face super-middleweight/light-heavyweight champ Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) later this year.

ESPN - Atlantic City has found the 'Ghost' of Gatti - Boxing
ESPN.com said:
Atlantic City has found the 'Ghost' of Gatti

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- A fighter who can draw profuse and passionate crowds in his hometown is a promoter's dream.

A fighter who can draw those same crowds 426 miles from his hometown is a dream come true for the entire sport.

It was only natural that Joe Mesi did big business in Buffalo or that Paul Spadafora was a hit in Pittsburgh.

It's a bit unnatural that 5,000 fans follow Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik from his native Youngstown, Ohio, to Atlantic City, N.J., every time he fights there.

I don't watch much boxing; I only catch some of the classics on ESPN.

But the announcer in that Youtube was spot on, Kelly Pavlik is a technician. And it doesn't look like he's hitting that hard, but you know that each one of those punches packs a WHALLOP. Look at that poor guy just take a knee.

Wow. What a technician.

That's one of the problems with boxing in that the governing cannot dictate to a champion who he has to fight in order to maintain that championship. This will just make Kelly that much hungrier when he does get him.

If Calzaghe ducks him, Pavlik wants Ohio fight

Monday, June 16, 2008Joe Maxse
Plain Dealer Reporter
Joe Calzaghe can talk for as long as he wants. If the undefeated super middleweight champion from Wales wants to talk himself out of a match against middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, all the Youngstown fighter's camp can do is listen - and shake their heads.
That's how Cameron Dunkin, Pavlik's Las Vegas-based manager, sees it.
"We're really on their time frame," said Dunkin, contacted by phone last week. "There are negotiations with Calzaghe, Bob Arum [Pavlik's promoter] and HBO. But I just told all of them to keep talking."
