Kelly Pavlik (official thread)

It was standing room only at the Southside Boxing Club in Youngstown yesterday as undefeated middleweight champion Kelly" The Ghost" Pavlik (32-0, 29 KOs), and trainer Jack Loew hosted a media workout. Reporters and TV crews from all over Ohio descended on the only gym Pavlik has ever known to speak to its favorite son as he prepares for his epic rematch against former undisputed world champion Jermain "Bad Intentions" Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KOs), from Little Rock, AK. Promoted by Top Rank and DiBella Entertainment, Pavlik-Taylor II takes place Saturday, February 16, at the MGM Grand. It will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.

"I know Taylor wants redemption, he's a competitor, but that may be his downfall. I can tell he is more intent on beating me than on winning the fight and believe me, there is a difference in those philosophies. This fight is my sole focus. I've been watching more tape than I usually do. Jack and I have been working on correcting the mistakes I made in the last fight -- I won't be sticking my chin out in this fight. The rematch is going to be tough, but I think he has a lot more to correct than I do. I'm having my best training camp ever. Winning the title has added extra motivation to me. It has spurred me to raise my performance to another level...a level I have never experienced before."

JACK LOEW
"I have been training Kelly since he was nine. He's always been a hard worker in the gym, but since he's won the world title he's become a different fighter in the gym. He is more focused and you can tell he's working harder on his strength and conditioning because his punches are faster and more explosive than ever. He's been on weight for over a week and he's training like an animal. Kelly Pavlik, world champion, is a whole different cat from Kelly Pavlik, the contender. That's how much he has improved since winning the title in September. It's remarkable. Nothing has distracted him. This is a big fight for Kelly from a money point of view. The money will be much bigger for Kelly when he beats Taylor again. Taylor didn't change in any of his fights and I doubt he'll change now. Kelly's not going to be much different either. He's still going to come to fight and throw a million punches. But we'll have a few tricks up our sleeve. "He's [Ozell Nelson] the guy who taught him [Jermain Taylor] all his bad habits, so I'm thankful Jermain brought him back. Taylor has a lot more to correct than we do. We'll correct our mistakes; it's a matter of will he?"

Kelly will not win a decision against Taylor..it has to be a TKO,so I'm going early this time and predicting a RD2 or 3 TKO for the Ghost.

I think Taylor will think a little too much in this fight and as soon as he does... boom....gets caught again and down goes Taylor.

and once your hurt against the ghost..forget about it.

KELLY PAVLIK VS. JERMAIN TAYLOR: HBO pay-per-view, Saturday, 9 p.m.
Youngstown boxer Kelly Pavlik accepts spotlight as he prepares for rematch with Jermain Taylor

Tuesday, February 12, 2008Joe Maxse
Plain Dealer Reporter
Hardly anyone noticed the scarlet-and-gray- clad entourage or its purposeful strides. On Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, the Bally's Casino crowd in Atlantic City, N.J., was more interested in the slot machines than the guys from Ohio.
The Boardwalk strollers paid more attention to holding hands or perusing the oceanside shops.
But the outlook changed in a matter of steps, a few flashes from a tag-along photographer turning heads. Approaching the Convention Center, people began to notice Kelly Pavlik was on his way to the biggest challenge of his boxing career.

No, it wasn't like some politician or movie star was in their midst. It was just a lunch-pail kind of guy going to work.
Maybe that's what got them going, knowing this underdog needed their help. The well-wishers and shouts of encouragement grew with each step, the backslaps and vacation cameras clicking to signal the Youngstown fighter could pull it off. And he did.
Somehow recovering from a near-disastrous second round, Pavlik (32-0) scored the 29th knockout of his career when he brutally dispatched Jermain Taylor in the seventh round. He brought home to Youngstown both the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization middleweight title belts.

Bernard Fernandez: Rematch for Pavlik, Taylor this weekend in Vegas

Philadelphia Daily News
KELLY "THE GHOST" Pavlik is confident he'll win his Saturday night rematch with Jermain Taylor, whom he knocked out in seven rounds in their first meeting.
is confident he'll win his Saturday night rematch with , whom he knocked out in seven rounds in their first meeting. Perhaps Pavlik (32-0, 29 KOs), whose WBC and WBO middleweight championships won't be on the line at Las Vegas' MGM Grand - this fight is at a catchweight of 166 pounds - would be better off predicting a victory for Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KOs). When it comes to prognosticating or having his success rub off onto others, the Youngstown, Ohio, slugger doesn't exactly have the Midas touch.
Before the Super Bowl XLII matchup of the New York Giants and the undefeated, heavily favored New England Patriots, Pavlik figured Eli Manning and his teammates didn't have, well, a ghost of a chance.
"You can't bet against Tom Brady," Pavlik reasoned. "He is having a Kelly Pavlik type of season."

Pavlik fighting for more than respect
Champion's hometown fueling him to keep on impressive streak.
By Robert Morales, Staff writer
Article Launched: 02/13/2008 12:32:21 AM PST

Kelly Pavlik is nothing like most superstars, who embrace the attention their celebrity brings. But he is a superstar, make no mistake about it. Especially in the hearts of the faithful in his native Youngstown, Ohio, a city in the northeastern part of the state that still has not recovered from the decline of its steel industry in the late 1970s to mid 1980s. It's also taken some recent hits, what with the financial problems of General Motors and auto parts maker Delphi in nearby Lordstown and Warren.
But Youngstown received an emotional shot in the arm when Pavlik got up from a second-round knockdown to viciously knock out Jermain Taylor in the seventh to win the middleweight championship last September in Atlantic City.
Pavlik was one punch from being knocked out, then did the knocking out.

So what will be on Kelly's trunks? Click here

Published:Wednesday, February 13, 2008

He's had Ohio State on his shorts (Oops: The Ohio State). He's even had a crack cream company.

So what trunks will Kelly be sporting Saturday night? Here's a glimpse.

From the article:

The Phantom Fireworks name, logo and website address will adorn the back of Pavlik's trunks during the fight, while the Youngstown State University and Pavlik's ghost logos will be on the front.

I think's it cool that if he's not pimping tOSU he's pimping the local university.

Taylor comes out hard and fast in the beginning, but loses steam in the fourth round from accuate jabs and a few straight right bombs. The fight is over in five via brutal knockout/stoppage. Ozell has not prepared Taylor for Kelly's power, he is concentrating too much on imitating Kelly's fight training preparation. This is a cash out fight for Jermain Taylor, he has zero chance of success in this bout.

Tressel, Pavlik support each other's title quest
Friday, February 15, 2008 2:54 AM

The Columbus Dispatch

YOUNGSTOWN -- Beyond the common bond of this city, there is little that boxer Kelly Pavlik shares with Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel.

Pavlik, a brawler from the city's rough-and-tumble South Side, is the middleweight champion of the world. Tressel is a cerebral man, educated at a private college. Because of their ties to this city and the Mahoning Valley, they have become unlikely friends, heroes to locals from both sides of the tracks.

"We have forged a mutual respect," said Tressel, who coached Youngstown State for 15 seasons. Pavlik, he added, "is a great young man."

The first hint of their relationship came in September, when Pavlik wore an official Ohio State logo on his scarlet-and-gray trunks during his seventh-round knockout of champion Jermain Taylor, an Arkansas native who wore a Razorbacks logo on his trunks.

"That was mainly because I was a big fan of the Buckeyes," Pavlik said. "I think (Tressel) helped us out with that one."

Middleweight champ forges bond with town en route to title

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

YOUNGSTOWN -- Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik is a world boxing champion, albeit one who has little use for the stereotypical trappings that come with such a title.

The idea of indulgence in fur, jewels, fast cars or fast women makes him laugh.

"You do see a lot of that stuff in this sport," he said last week after an intense sparring and heavy-bag session in his home gym, the dilapidated Southside Boxing Club.

"All that money? Wow. You know what I would do with that money? I'd put it away, set some things up, help some people out. What the hell am I going to do with all that stuff, $75,000 cars and all that? That ain't me."

Pavlik now eyes WBA, IBF crowns

Monday, February 18, 2008 2:52 AM
By Greg Beacham

Associated Press

LAS VEGAS -- Kelly Pavlik proved his superiority and fattened his bank account with a second victory over Jermain Taylor. Now this frugal people's champion is finally ready to go shopping -- for two really ugly belts.
Moments after winning a unanimous decision in his rematch with Taylor on Saturday night, Pavlik reiterated his plan to add the WBA and IBF middleweight titles to the WBC and WBO championships he took from Taylor last year.
"My No. 1 goal since I won the middleweight title has been to unify the belts," Pavlik said. "That's been a dream of mine since I started fighting, and that's what I'd love to do now."
